The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has listed five requirements for importation of ICT products and systems.
In a notice dated March 25, CA said the decision will enhance facilitation of trade on National Electronic Single Window System.

“The Authority wishes to bring to the attention of all stakeholders of the single window system the following requirements, which are essential for ensuring smooth processing of import permits for ICT products and systems,” reads part of the notice.
CA said all importers of ICT products meant for sale are required to have the necessary license associated with the products they are importing into the country for sale.

Besides, all importers of ICT products meant for sale are required to attach a copy of the valid compliance certificate associated with the license they hold for which an importation permit is being sought.
The attached invoice for the imported ICT products must also include the model number and quantity.

This is required to confirm the Type Approval status and facilitate inspection and customs release.
Further, CA has encouraged importers of ICT products to cross reference the list of type-approved equipment on the Authority’s website, at https://www.ca.go.ke/licensee-register and attach a screenshot of the specific model as per the list.

Internet Devices & Additional Information
Importers of internet connecting devices meant for sale in Kenya are required to attach technical specifications confirming compliance with IPv6 requirements, as per the Authority’s IPv6 Migration Strategy, found at https://www.ca.go.ke/sector-guidelines?page=0.
“Importers are advised that additional information may be sought on a case-by-case basis depending on the complexity and novelty of non-Type Approved ICT product being imported into the country for non-commercial use,” CA said.

Communications Authority of Kenya Roles
CA is the regulatory agency for the ICT industry in Kenya, responsible for the regulation of telecommunications, e-commerce, cyber security, broadcasting and postal/ courier services.
It is responsible for protecting consumer rights on communications platforms, managing competition within the sector to ensure a level playing ground for all players, and facilitating trade in ICT products through processing of import Permits on the government’s National Electronic Single Window System.
The Authority also manages the country’s numbering and frequency spectrum resources, administers the Universal Service Fund (USF), and safeguards the interests of consumers of ICT services.
