Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a notorious Thika based sim swap fraudster.
In a statement on Thursday, September 28, DCI revealed that the man went to a Safaricom shop seeking sim replacement services using a fake Identity Card.
Further, DCI stated that the suspect also presented forged police abstract from the Central Police Station in Nairobi.
Officials at the Safaricom shop alerted the officers who the interrogated the suspect. DCI explained that the man led them to a house in Zimmerman where they were running their operations.
“Upon interrogation, he led detectives to a house in Zimmerman where a mobile phone used for sim registration and assorted sim replacement cards were recovered.
“Detectives also recovered forged police abstract forms and waiting cards bearing different names, an M-Pesa till number application booklet, several ID cards among other items,” the statement read in part.

How DCI Arrested the Partner of Suspect
Moreover, the detectives stated that they had earlier on September 19 arrested the suspect’s associate and arraigned.
The female associate was also arrested while seeking similar services from another Safaricom shop using forged documents.
“She was using forged documents with the sole intention of stealing from her victims mobile money wallets. Paper writings bearing confidential customer information were recovered from her house in Komarock-Nairobi,” added the statement.
Moreover, the two are believed to be part of the notorious Mulot syndicate who targeted unsuspecting individuals with huge M-Pesa balances.
“Once they take over the victims’ phone numbers, they are able drain off their accounts. The DCI thanks the keen-eyed agile Safaricom attendants who alerted the police of the suspicious characters,” DCI explained.
Arrest of Mulot Sim Swap Gang Leader
On December 30, DCI officers arrested Mulot SIM swap gang leader David Mutai alias Hillary Langat Matindwet in Kericho Town outside a local KCB bank. He was arrested while planning another heist.

Members of the public spotted him and alerted the police who were manning the premise who arrested him.
Moreover, DCI stated that the gang leader was identified following comprehensive investigations by the detectives based at the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau.
