Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested nine employees of a Sacco belonging to the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
According to a statement on Saturday, September 23, the employees were connected to the disappearance of Ksh160 million at the SACCO.
The nine included the internal auditor, the loans manager, the accountant, and the system analysts.
Additionally, DCI noted that others arrested over the scandal were from Sure-step Systems, an NIS officer who colluded with the SACCO staff to siphon funds and a former employee of the SACCO.
“The employees of Njiwa Sacco, belonging to staff of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) were rounded up following comprehensive joint investigations, conducted by detectives and officials from the spy agency,” the statement read in part.

Charges Against the Suspects
The Directorate stated that the nine had been dismissed from the SACCO and faced nine counts of conspiracy to commit a felony, theft, false accounting and negligence.
Additionally, they face counts of computer fraud, forgery, uttering of false documents and access with intent to commit an offence among other charges.
“They will be arraigned in court on Monday, September 25, 2023, to answer to their crimes,” added the statement.
Other Suspects in the Case
At the same time, the directorate stated that three other suspects in the disappearance of Ksh160 million from the NIS SACCO had gone into hiding.
DCI has since launched a manhunt for the remaining three suspects.
“The agencies involved in the investigation of this high-level fraud shall continue to investigate and expose corrupt individuals and networks, while taking concrete steps to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of public entities,’ added DCI.

DCI Recent Fraud Arrest
In a separate Incident, on September 8, DCI officers apprehended two men claiming to be officers of the Directorate of Military Intelligence and National Intelligence Service (NIS).
According to the Directorate, the two presented themselves at their headquarters seeking assistance to arrest a suspect.
Further, the two alluded to being frustrated by investigating officers in a case of obtaining money by false pretense that was allegedly recorded at Central Police Station in Nairobi.
