The sudden death of Senior National Intelligence Service (NIS) Officer Tom Adala has sparked questions and concerns among lawmakers, who are now demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his demise.
On June 5, 2024, Adala was found dead at his residence in Kilimani, Nairobi, with reports indicating that he took his own life due to depression.

The incident has left many wondering what could have driven a dedicated public servant like Adala to such a tragic end.
Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi has taken the lead in seeking answers, calling for a statement from the National Assembly’s Committee on Administration and Internal Security.

Atandi said he wants the committee to clarify why Adala was reassigned other duties within the service and provide details of the legal framework for such a reassignment.

Additionally, the MP wants the committee to provide a report on the accuracy of reports that Adala suffered from stress and humiliation at the NIS due to his ethnicity.

He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the investigation, stating that the process was necessary so as to ensure justice for his family.

“The circumstances surrounding his death call for thorough and transparent investigations to ensure justice for his family and address any work-related circumstances that may have led to his tragic death so as to secure the integrity of NIS and other national security institutions,” said Atandi.
The matter has been referred to the Committee on Internal Security, chaired by Narok West MP Gabriel Tongoyo, who will now summon various stakeholders to aid in the investigation.
The committee’s findings are expected to provide clarity and closure for Adala’s family and friends.
“Provide a report on the status of investigations into the death of Mr. Tom Adala, include a timeline for the completion of the investigation and when the findings would be made public to provide clarity and closure for Mr. Adala’s family and friends,” said Atandi.

The post-mortem examination concluded that Adala died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, with Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor stating that Adala was killed by a single bullet to the head.
“It was a single gunshot wound that killed the NIS officer, it looks like self-inflicted, so most likely it was suicide.”
“The bullet entered on the right side of the head and exited on the left side,” explained Dr. Oduor.
A suicide note left behind by Adala stated that nobody should be blamed for his death and included instructions for his children to visit his grave often.
