Police Officer David Chesire made lengthy phone calls to his family including his father, mother and sister two hours before he was swept away by floods at the Country Bus terminus.
Speaking to the media on Friday, April 6, Chesire’s mother revealed that the officer called his father at about 8:00 pm on Sunday, March 24.
At the time, she narrates, her son was very happy and even spoke to his father over a long period. He also asked to speak to his mother and promised to go back home the following weekend.
According to the mother, her son wanted to till their farm and plant ahead of the rain season.
“He called and spoke to his father that night. He was so full of joy and was excited. When I spoke to him, he told me that he would come back home on Saturday to till the farm and plant because we had been blessed with good rains,” she narrated.
Despite the unfortunate incident, Chesire’s mother hailed him for his bravery and kind heart, saying that it brought her joy that he saved the lives of others.
“I am happy that my son saved the lives of four other people, and in the process he also succumbed. I thank God for his kind heart,” she added.
Chesire then made a lengthy call with his sister and was shortly after swept away by raging waters.

Officer Drowns After Heavy Downpour
The police officer was one of four others who were patrolling around the terminus when he rushed to save three women and a child from stalls that had collapsed.
However, the support slab unexpectedly caved in, and the water swept him away.
Nairobi Police Chief Adamson Bungei recounted the efforts of the team, highlighting how they managed to rescue the family before the devastating sequence of events unfolded.
“He was among three officers that had responded to a distress call after three women and a child were trapped in rubble following the collapse of a slab connecting two stalls in the area.”
“We searched for him in vain. We are going back to the place for further searches,” Bungei said.
