Former National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director General Michael Gichangi is among the three Kenya Airways (KQ) directors set to retire in June 2024.
In its 48th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders notice, KQ listed election of directors as one of the agenda of the meeting scheduled for June 14, 2024.
Kenya Airways revealed that General Gichangi will retire alongside John Wilson and Philip Wambungu.
“Major Gen. (Rtd) Michael Gichangi retires in accordance with Article 69 of the Company’s Articles of Association, and being eligible, offers himself for reelection,” the notice read in part.

Kenya Airways Boards Election & Proposed Resolution
The Airline issued a similar update regarding Wilson and Wambungu stating that shareholders will be given an opportunity to elect Directors to fill the vacancies.
“Shareholders will be requested to elect the Board members at the meeting or in advance of the meeting. Names of persons nominated will be available 7 days before the AGM on the Company’s website page https://corporate.kenya-airways.com/en/investors-shareholders/annual-reports/ and or the Share Registrar’s website at https://digital.candrgroup.co.ke, following the steps set out hereinafter,” KQ said.
Besides, the shareholders will elect members of the Audit and Risk Committee currently occupied by David Kabeberi, Dr. Haron Sirima (Representative of Treasury CS), Transport PS Mohamed Daghar, Gen. Gichangi and John Wilson.
Kenya Airways has proposed that the members of the Audit and Risk Committee be re-elected during the general meeting.
“Proposed Resolution: That David Kabeberi, Dr. Haron Sirima, Mohamed Daghar, Gen. Gichangi and Wilson be re-elected as members of the Audit and Risk Committee subject to election of Board members under Agenda No.5 above,” read the notice in part.

Gichagi Career
Gichagi joined the Kenya Air Force as a pilot in 1975 and rose through the ranks serving in all its flying operations hierarchy command positions.
He retired from the military in 2006 as the Chief of Strategic Plans and Policy at the Defence Headquarters.
Gichagi was appointed NIS Director General that same year and he served in his position until 2014.
He holds a master’s degree in aviation management from Griffith University in Australia and is a graduate of the National Defence College.

Additionally, he has a commercial pilots license from the Federal Aviation Authority of the United States of America and one from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and is a qualified flying instructor.
In recognition of his service to the nation, he has been honored as an Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH) and a Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS).
He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Order (DCO) medal for an act of Valor while flying in the Kenya Air Force.
