The Nairobi City County under the leadership of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced its intention to declare the Nairobi River Corridor as a Special Planning Area.
In a notice shared in one of the local dailies dated Monday March 10, this decision is in line with a request by the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development proposing to declare the Nairobi River Corridor as a Special Planning Area.
“Following a request by the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development proposing to declare the Nairobi River Corridor as a Special Planning Area, and in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 52, and 53 of the Physical and Land Use Planning Act, 2019, the County Executive Committee Member, Built Environment & Urban Planning intends to declare the Nairobi River Corridor as a Special Planning Area,” read the statement.
This move will see people living within the corridor of Nairobi River evicted by the Nairobi City County.
Sakaja Announces Plan to Declare Nairobi River Corridor a Special Planning Area
According to the County government, the Corridor that will be affected spans the area along Nairobi River from Naivasha Road to Ruai, including the river tributaries.
The corridor also covers a spatial area extending 60m beyond the high-water mark on each side of the river (30m Riparian corridor and an additional 30m Development area).
The plan will provide a framework for:
- River Regeneration
- Flood Hazard Mitigation
- Riparian Land Use
- Land Redevelopment
- Associated Infrastructure

Further, the Nairobi City County announced that the plan will also encompass a financing structure for the development of the special planning area.
Nairobi County Government Gives Citizens 14 Days to Submit their Opinions About Proposal
Moreover, the County government announced that it will undertake this multi-sectoral Planning process in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, Nairobi Rivers Commission, National Environmental Management Authority and other relevant stakeholders.
A map detailing the designated area will be physically available at the office of the Chief Officer, Urban Planning and Development, 2nd Floor, City Hall Annex.
The same will also be displayed at the precincts of the Nairobi County Government offices at City Hall, all Ward Administration offices within the targeted Sub-Counties as well as the Nairobi City County official website.
