The United Energy and Petroleum Association has warned of a potential nationwide fuel shortage unless the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) adjusts current fuel prices.
According to the association, on March 23, the latest pricing review failed to reflect the supply difficulties dealers are facing amid the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
The dealers have urged EPRA to revise fuel prices to reflect actual market costs, warning that continued operation under current rates is unsustainable.
“The prices set by EPRA are no longer viable for fuel suppliers. If urgent adjustments are not made, dealers may have no choice but to suspend sales,” the association chairperson Irene Kimathi said.
Fuel Dealers Threaten to Stop Sales Amid Price Dispute
UNEPA has asked for a temporary pause on fuel price rules so prices can reflect the market.
The association said that dealers have been losing money in recent weeks as their working capital is running out.
Dealers report that fuel shortages have intensified nationwide, with many independent suppliers struggling to access stock.
UNEPA also stated that it is critical for the government to review the nation’s fuel infrastructure and strengthen strategic reserves to mitigate future supply uncertainties.
Despite expectations that cargoes will continue arriving at the port, the association stated that the projected volumes remain below normal, adding pressure to the regulated pricing system.
Further, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have reportedly shown reluctance to sell at current prices due to rising landed costs following the Middle East crisis.

EPRA Announces Fuel Prices for March and April Cycle
On March 14, EPRA announced the maximum retail prices for petroleum products, effective from March 15, 2025, to April 14, 2026.
The regulator stated that the prices of Super Petrol, Kerosene, and Diesel would remain unchanged.
Retail prices in Nairobi now stand at KSh178.28 for Super Petrol, KSh166.54 for Diesel, and KSh152.78 for Kerosene, effective at midnight for the next 30 days.

“In the period under review, the maximum allowed petroleum pump prices for Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene remain unchanged. In Nairobi, Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene now retail at KShs.178.28, Kshs. 166.54, and Kshs. 152.78 effective midnight for the next 30 days,” EPRA announced.
In other cities, Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene will retail at KSh178.16, KSh166.76, and KSh153.03 per litre in Kisumu, KSh175.00, KSh163.26, and KSh149.49 per litre in Mombasa, and KSh178.16, KSh166.77, and KSh153.03 per litre in Eldoret, respectively.
EPRA Stated that that the average landed cost of imported Super Petrol rose by 1.00%, increasing from US$576.34 per cubic metre in January 2026 to US$582.11 per cubic metre in February 2026.
