The debate around the political future of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua continues to cause tremors in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region. A section of politicians wants President William Ruto to ditch his deputy and instead work with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki. However, Gachagua’s allies have dismissed this as hot air.
Githunguri lawmaker Gathoni Wamuchomba is the latest to dismiss spirited efforts to isolate Gachagua, exactly two years after he was sworn-in as the country’s second in command.
On Thursday, September 12, forty Members of Parliament signed the Nyahururu Declaration, endorsing Kindiki.
However, Wamuchumba termed the move a blessing in disguise.
“For now, their declaration is just hot air aiming at stirring the political landscape to scare the Deputy President out of government. As they do so, the Deputy President is getting bolder and mutating into a darling of most Kenyans,” read part of her statement.
She went on to claim that she doesn’t care who is connected to the national government. Moreover, she said that all that matters is whether the voters are getting the promised yields and returns in coffee, milk, and tea.
Wamuchomba Questions Motive
Additionally, she questioned if the promises made by the Kenya Kwanza government during the campaigns are being delivered to voters.
Wamuchomba added, “What the 48 MPs should know is that they lost touch with their voters when they voted yes to the very punitive finance bills in 2023 and 2024.

A press conference to disown DP Gachagua is a diversionary tactic from the very pressing needs of their voters,” she stated.
Further, in her statement, she urged the MPs to instead direct their energy towards pressing for accountability regarding the missing children from the Hillside Endarasha fire and the current eviction of Wakulima traders from Marikiti.
She emphasized the detachment of the MPs from their voters, asserting that if they were in touch, they would demand fair treatment for victims of house demolitions in Mathare, the pipeline, and the Mai Mahiu dam tragedy.
Gachagua under Siege
DP Gachagua has been accused of various issues, including insubordination and undermining the Presidency. Some MPs accuse Gachagua of not aligning with the President’s directives and undermining his authority.

Additionally, some of the DP’s critics accused him of fueling anti-government protests, thus undermining President William Ruto’s administration.
On the other hand, he has been accused of defending regional interests. It is alleged that his efforts to secure government positions and address issues for the Mt. Kenya region have led to opposition from some MPs.
Consequently, some are pushing for the impeachment of Gachagua, painting a picture of the DP and his boss pulling in different directions.
On his side, Gachagua who describes himself as a truthful man has maintained that he will continue listening to the ground and unite the Mt Kenya region.
