The Gen Z movement has quickly gained momentum, capturing the attention of both national and international observers.
The call for camping gear and essential supplies indicates that the protesters are ready for an extended stay at Uhuru Park, signaling a shift from short-term demonstrations.
GenZ Protests in Kenya
The anti-government protests began on June 18 after the Finance Bill was first made public.
After several days of protests against what they perceived as punitive taxes in the Bill, Gen Z successfully pressured the government to withdraw the bill on June 26, and leading President William Ruto to sack his cabinet on July 11.

“Upon reflection, listening keenly to what the people of Kenya have said and after a holistic appraisal of the performance of my Cabinet and its achievements and challenges, I have, in line with the powers given to me by Article 152(1) and 152(5)(b) of the Constitution and Section 12 of the Office of the Attorney-General Act, decided to dismiss with immediate effect all the Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney-General from the Cabinet of the Republic of Kenya except the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs,” said Ruto
However, the Gen Z movement has vowed to sustain the pressure, with some members still pushing for the President’s resignation and others questioning his decision to spare the Prime Cabinet Secretary in his purge.
Additionally, they are also demanding justice for those killed and injured during the protests and the reconstitution of the IEBC to recall Members of Parliament hence sparking a fresh round of the youth-led demonstrations.
