Homa Bay County is set for a major infrastructure boost as the national government rolls out development projects targeting transport, housing, water supply, trade, and the blue economy.
According to the regional investment status report, the government has set over 270 projects across the four counties in the Nyanza region.
The projects, spread across roads, affordable housing, infrastructure, and modern markets, are jointly valued at more than Sh220 billion.
The roads project accounts for KSh96.54 billion, covering more than 1,525 kilometers, while housing projects account for KSh90.44 billion, targeting 38,846 housing units.
Currently, nine projects worth KSh4.99 billion have been fully completed, while 19 projects valued at KSh10.25 billion are near completion.
Principal Secretary for the Interior and National Administration, Raymond Omollo, stated that the projects are meant to transform the region economically while ensuring equitable development across the country.
“These projects are about changing lives and opening up opportunities for the people. Roads, markets, housing, and institutional infrastructure are key drivers of economic growth and improved livelihoods,” said Omollo.
Major Road and Transport Upgrades in Homabay County
Several key road upgrades are expected to ease the movement of people and goods within Homa Bay and its neighboring counties.

Among the flagship developments is the Mbita–Sindo–Kiabuya–Karungu road, which is expected to open the lakeside corridor and strengthen trade along Lake Victoria’s southern shoreline.
Homa Bay town roads dualling project is also part of the urban transformation agenda, targeting congestion in the town center and improving accessibility within the municipality.
The Rusinga Ring Road project is expected to enhance connectivity around Rusinga Island, supporting tourism and local commerce.
The Kadel–Ramba Road upgrade, valued at KSh3.7 billion, is another major investment aimed at improving rural access routes and linking agricultural zones to markets.
Kabunde Airstrip is also set to be upgraded to support regional mobility, boost tourism, and emergency services in the region.
Housing, Modern Markets, and Urban Development Drive
Affordable housing projects have been planned in Homa Bay town, Oyugis, and Mbitato to increase access to decent, affordable shelter.
Urban renewal is also being supported through the construction and modernization of markets in Kendu Bay, Ndhiwa, Mbita, Kobodo, Misambi, and Rodi Kopany.
The county is also set to benefit from the development of the Homa Bay Aggregation and Industrial Park, a project expected to support value addition for agricultural produce.
Urban infrastructure includes the expansion and renovation of the Raila Odinga Stadium to boost sports activities and host larger regional events.
Water, Energy, and Blue Economy Investments
Homa Bay Cluster Water Supply Project, including Last Mile Connectivity Phase I, is expected to expand access to clean water across urban and peri-urban areas.
Similar interventions include the Kendu Bay Water and Sanitation Project and the Oyugis water supply project, both aimed at improving public health and reliability of water services.
In the energy sector, last-mile electricity connectivity projects are being rolled out across trading centers and markets to support small businesses.
The blue economy also features prominently, with investments in fish landing sites and fish markets to support the county’s fishing industry.
Other development projects include the rehabilitation of Homa Bay Pier, the expansion of TVET institutions and student hostels, and the construction of State Lodge facilities in the county.
