The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Selection Panel Chair, Dr. Nelson Makanda has revealed the number of applicants who have submitted applications for the electoral chairperson and commissioners’ positions.
In a statement on Tuesday, February 11, Makanda said the panel has received 339 applications so far since opening the application process on February 1.

“As provided for in the IEBC Act Cap. 7C, ‘the Selection Panel shall, within seven days of its appointment, invite applications from qualified persons’. As a result, the panel proceeded to call for applications from qualified and interested persons through adverts placed in the print media on Saturday 1st February 2025,” read the statement in part.
“This advert was also published in the Special Kenya Gazette on 3rd February 2025 as well as on the Parliamentary Service Commission website. So far, as of 10th February 2025, the Selection Panel has received 339 applications.

Makanda said the application process is ongoing, in compliance with the advertisement and will close on Saturday 15th February 2025.
The Panel also stated that it is actively engaging with relevant stakeholders in preparation for the task ahead.

It further acknowledged the crucial role of the media in shaping public perception and dialogue, emphasizing appreciation for their unwavering support.
The Panel reassured the public that in discharging its mandate, it remains guided by the Constitution, the IEBC Act Cap 7C, and all other relevant laws governing the process.
Requirements for Appointment as IEBC Chairperson (1 Vacancy)
(a) At least fifteen years of experience as a superior court judge; or
(b) At least fifteen years of experience as a distinguished academic, judicial officer, legal practitioner, or in another relevant legal field; or
(c) Held the qualifications mentioned in paragraphs (a) or (b) for a cumulative period of fifteen years; and
(d) Met the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.
A person is not eligible for appointment as IEBC Chairperson if, within the preceding five years, they have:
- Held office or stood for election as a Member of Parliament (MP) or a County Assembly member.
Additionally, interested candidates who are:
- Members of the governing body of a political party or
- Hold any state office

Requirements for Appointment as Member of the IEBC (Six Vacancies)
A person is qualified for appointment as a member of the IEBC if they:
- Hold a degree from a recognized university.
- Have proven knowledge and at least ten years of experience in any of the following fields, as listed by the Public Service Commission (PSC):
- Electoral matters
- Management
- Finance
- Governance
- Public administration
- Law
- Information and communication technology (ICT)
- Accounting
Additionally, the candidate must meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.
