Govt to Create Volunteering Opportunities for Medicine and Law Students

The government has approved the Internship and Volunteer Policy and Guidelines for the Public Service to create thousands of jobs for university students. 

Endorsed by the Cabinet, the policy aims to secure structured, paid internships and volunteer opportunities for Kenyans within the government.

Further, a Tuesday, March 11, cabinet dispatch detailed that the move seeks to streamline recruitment, engagement, and management of interns and volunteers across government institutions.

Consequently, this will ensure fair compensation and clear career pathways.

How the New Policy Works 

For years, graduates have struggled with inconsistent and fragmented internship programs from the Public Service Commission (PSC), which offer little to no pay.

Therefore, the new policy standardizes these programs, guaranteeing equal opportunities, professional development, and hands-on experience for youth transitioning from school to employment.

“It provides a standardized framework to streamline the recruitment, engagement, and management of interns and volunteers across government institutions.

“With thousands of graduates entering the job market annually, the framework aims to bridge the education-to-employment gap by equipping young professionals with hands-on skills essential for career progression,” explained the cabinet dispatch. 

At the same time, the policy will ensure the formalization of volunteerism in public service.

According to the government, volunteering will be recognized for its “critical role in disaster response, national development, and community service.

Further, it will be open for degree, diploma, and professional certificate holders in various fields, including law and medicine. 

“It covers degree, diploma, and professional certificate holders, ensuring equitable opportunities while meeting professional licensing requirements in fields such as medicine and law,” the dispatch read in part.
