A section of employees of Carrefour Kenya are staring at job losses after the retail chain announced the closure of a major mall.
In a notice dated November 27, Carrefour Kenya stated that it was closing its Kisumu Mega Plaza Mall store, effective November 30, 2024.
The decision to close the mall was made as part of a strategic evaluation to ensure the long-term plans for Kenya remain feasible and sustainable due to the company’s strategic plans for sustainability.
“We are writing to inform you of an upcoming change regarding our Carrefour Mega Plaza Mali store in Kisumu,” read the notice in part.
“After careful consideration, we have decided to close this location, effective November 30, 2024.”

Additionally, the notice said that Carrefour Kenya highly value its partnership with suppliers and assured them that the closure does not reflect any change in their commitment.
“We will continue to work closely with you to ensure a smooth transition and minimize any disruptions. We encourage you to contact your respective Category Manager to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.”

Carrefour Kenya stated that it remains committed to growing in the country and contributing to the local economy.
“We remain dedicated to addressing our customers’ needs, ensuring mutual growth with you, our valued partners, and advancing the development of the communities we serve,” the notice further reads.
“Thank you for your continued support.”
In another notice directed to employees, Director of Sustainability & HC-EA, Maisa Galat, said that he would like to assure them of the company’s commitment to supporting colleagues during this transition.

“We are working diligently to reassign all affected colleagues to other Carrefour stores within Kisumu and the surrounding area and are confident that we will minimize any disruption to their roles,” the notice read in part.
