Joseph Irungu alias Jowie who was sentenced to the death for the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani has filed a notice of appeal.
According to the court documents, Jowie has challenged the sentence delivered by Lady Justice Grace Nzioka.
Further, he has challenged the conviction of murder made by the same judge on February 9.
Also, he indicated that he intends to be present for the hearing.
“Take notice that Joseph Kuria Irungu alias Jowie appeals to the Court of Appeal against the decisions of the Honourable Lady Justice Grace Nzioka delivered in open court at Milimani, Nairobi on the 9th day February 2024 and in her written judgment dated 9th February 2024
“Whereby the Appellant was convicted of Murder and sentenced to death on 13th March 2024. The appeal is against the conviction and sentence,” the documents read in part.

Jowie Announces His Intention to Appeal Conviction
After his conviction, his attorney Hassan Nandwa made public their intention to appeal the decision even as the judge directed that Jowie be remanded until his sentencing.
Immediately after he was found guilty, the court cancelled Jowie’s bond.
“This unfortunate decision, as much as we disagree with the learned judge, there is a way out; we will appeal and we’re hopeful that our appeal will be allowed when it comes.
“Otherwise, we respect the judge and her decision, and therefore we will head to the Court of Appeal when the time comes after the sentencing,” he said.

The Death Sentence
On March 13, Jowie was sentenced by Lady Justice Grace Nzioka to death for the murder of Monica Kimani which occurred in 2018.
During the ruling, the judge read out Jowie’s submissions asking the court to consider his prayers before settling on the sentence.
He asked for a non-custodial sentence instead of the death penalty that had been requested by the deceased’s family.
Additionally, he said that he was a first offender and asked for a favorable ruling.
Jowie told the court to consider the remarks made by the Monica’s father stating that his family was not out to seek revenge for the death of their daughter and that he would forgive him.
