The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has shortlisted 100 individuals after advertising 20 vacancies for High Court Judges.

According to JSC, it will conduct the interviews between April 3 and April 30, 2024, at CBK Towers 13th Floor, Harambee Avenue Nairobi.

In a notice dated March 8, 2024, the JSC listed 100 candidates from a list of 350 who had applied to become High Court judges.

“At the close of the advertisement on 3rd 2023 a total of 305 applications were received. The JSC will be conducting interviews for the posts of the judge of the High court from 3rd to 30th April 2024,” the JSC said.

JSC High Court vacancies

In a gazette notice on October 6, 2023, the JSC declared the 20 High Court judge jobs vacant.

Following the declaration of the vacancies, the Commission on October 13 invited qualified persons to apply for the vacant posts. The deadline for the application was November 3, 2023, at 5 pm

“Interested and qualified persons are requested to make their application by filling in an Online Application for Employment Form available at the Commission’s jobs portal,” the JSC notice read.

“They should upload soft copies of documents including a letter of application, and a detailed and updated CV summarizing their biodata including community service, financial discipline and pro-bono activity,” the commission added.

The CV was to capture details on involvement as a party in litigation and involvement in political activity. It was also to include details of any financial contribution to politicians if any, and criminal record.

Further, applicants were to reveal details on legal education and legal practice for the last five years.

Additional requirements

Moreover, applicants were to list three professional references and two-character references. The parties were to be used to verify and comment on their past and present employment.

In addition, the commission requested that the applicants provide updated emails and phone numbers of the references.

“Applicants should also upload their recent colored passport-sized photo and copies of testimonials, professional certificates, academic transcripts and certificate of admission to the roll of advocates,” the commission stated.

JSC warned applicants against providing false information and documents.

High court judges

Benefits for a High Court judge include a gross monthly compensation package that can range from Ksh750,000 to Ksh1,029,691.

The judge is required to have unrestricted original jurisdiction in both criminal and civil cases.

He/she has as the authority to hear any inquiries on constitutional interpretation.
