Kabarak University students on Monday, November 20 staged protests demanding justice for their colleague who was allegedly knocked down by a police vehicle on 18th November 2023.
In a statement confirming the accident and death of the first-year student, the Kabarak University Student Council (KUSO) condemned what they termed as recklessness and negligence that led to the death of the student.

According to the Universities president Karen Cheptoo Birech, the student was knocked outside the institution’s premises.
“It is with profound sadness that I address you concerning a tragic incident that occurred outside our school premises on 18th November 2023,” read the statement in part.

Likewise, the Student council expressed concerns over the safety of students within the premises while also sending their condolences to the family of the deceased.

“We strongly condemn this reckless act and are deeply concerned about the apparent negligence that led to such a tragic loss, the safety of our students is of utmost importance, and we will not rest until justice is found,” read the statement.
The deceased who according to the statement is a first-year medical student was identified as Joshua Plimo.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleague of Joshua Plimo a first year second semester pharmacy student,” stated Cheptoo.
Additionally, the student council president confirmed that the issue is being followed up at the Menegai Police station under OB no. 02/19/11/2023.
Kabarak University Management Calls for Calm Statement
Furthermore, the university vice chancellor Henry Kiplagat in a statement while calling for calm noted that the institution’s management is in contact with Joshua’s family to assist during the difficult time.
They also welcomed dialogue with the student’s faculty as well as the staff in a bid to ensure peace and safety of all students.
The universities’ management revealed that the incident occurred at around 9pm on November 18.
“The unfortunate incident occurred at around 9pm on November 18. Eyewitnesses accounts affirm that Joshua was struck by a police vehicle,” the Vice chancellor stated.
Also, the vice chancellor said post-mortem would be conducted on November 21.
Nonetheless, police were yet to release a statement on the issue by press time.
Kirinyaga University Student Murdered
On the other hand, Police in Kirinyaga County on Saturday November 18 launched investigations into the murder of a Kirinyaga University student at Kutus trading centre.
According to Mwea East sub–county Police Commander James Mutua, the fourth-year student was attacked by unknown people at around 9pm.

“The deceased was accompanied by his two fellow students who raised alarm after he collapsed as he started bleeding on the thigh following the attack,” said Mutua.
Likewise, the police boss confirmed that they were pursuing various leads that led to death of the University Student.
“We have informed his relatives and right now we are waiting for a postmortem,” said Mutua.
