Wiper Patriotic Front Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has issued a passionate plea to Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata and the Murang’a County Assembly to honor the late mask vendor Boniface Kariuki.
Kariuki was laid to rest on Friday, July 11, in Kangema, Murang’a County, after a police officer shot him in the head during protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) in June.
Speaking during Kariuki’s burial, Kalonzo asked Governor Kang’ata to name one street in Murang’a Town after Boniface Kariuki.
“I have asked the Governor through the County Assembly of Murang’a, we want to immortalise the young man, Boniface Kariuki. I am asking that the County Assembly led by the Governor, and the recommendation of the executive one street in Murang’a Town to be named after Boniface Kariuki,” the former Vice President said.
“We want to immortalise Boniface; he should not just be here lying dead and forgotten.”

At the same time, Kalonzo assured Kenyans that former Attorney General Justin Muturi is on Kariuki’s murder case through the People’s Restoration Justice Commission (PRJC), launched on June 24, 2025.
“Through his commission, even if Ruto does not want to be participating, I can tell you the international community will fund to make sure that the family of a young man like this is paid exemplary damages. His death cannot be paid Ksh2 million, not less than Ksh20 million,” Kalonzo added.

Earlier, tension engulfed Murang’a after a heavy contingent of police arrived ahead of Kariuki’s burial.
Photos and videos seen by The Kenya Times showed truckloads of police officers lined up at the Murang’a junction ahead of the vendor’s burial at his family home.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko deployed the Sonko Rescue Team to accompany the convoy from the Kenyatta University Funeral Home.
DPP approves murder charges
His burial comes a day after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) approved murder charges against Police Constable Klinzy Masinde Barasa over the fatal shooting.

Barasa’s co-accused, Duncan Kiprono, has since been released. Kariuki was shot at close range and rushed to KNH, where he underwent surgery.
He remained in the Intensive Care Unit for two weeks before being declared brain dead. A postmortem examination revealed that Kariuki died from a severe head injury.
Four bullet fragments were found lodged in his brain. Mourners present at his requiem mass held on Wednesday at the Holy Family Basilica eulogised him as a law-abiding and hardworking Kenyan.
