The government has rolled out a new scholarship program targeting Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates who scored D- and above in the exam at the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA).
The initiative is part of the Kenya TVET Project 2025, implemented in partnership with the Danish Government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to a public notice from NITA, the initiative is aimed at transforming the lives of young people, especially those who may not have performed well in their KCSE exams but have the drive and interest to work with their hands.
“It also aims to formalize the skills of workers already in the sector who lack certification,” stated the notice.

Benefits of the NITA Scholarship to Candidates
Further, the notice indicated that the program offers fully funded training and examination fees for courses in plumbing, carpentry, electrical installation, and solar energy systems.
The training will be conducted at the NITA Athi River Training Centre, with the September 2025 intake currently open for applications.
The scholarships are open to three main categories of applicants, including KCSE leavers with a grade of D- and above, who have a passion for building and construction trades.
The second category is of youth artisans (fundis) aged 18–35 years, currently working on construction sites but without formal training or certification.
Also, the program is accepting applications from experienced workers who lack academic papers but can undergo Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessments to earn certification based on their industry experience.
Additionally, NITA strongly encouraged women to apply, as the project seeks to promote gender inclusivity in technical and vocational training.

Program Details and How to Apply
For Form Four leavers, the training will run for two terms at the institution followed by a three-month mandatory industrial attachment arranged through NITA’s industry partners.
The skills Upgrading Program is for existing workers in the industry. The program runs for three months of training and three months of industrial attachment.
Beneficiaries under this category will be selected in collaboration with the Kenya Building Construction, Timber & Furniture Industries Employees Union.
On the other hand, the RPL Assessment is available to experienced workers without formal education who wish to earn certificates through assessment of their prior learning and on-the-job experience.
Upon successful completion, trainees will be awarded the National Skills Certificate II (NSC II) and may also sit for Government Trade Tests (Grades III, II, and I)—qualifications that improve employability and access to formal job markets.

Applicants are required to send: A brief application letter indicating the course area of interest, a copy of their KCSE certificate or result slip, and a copy of their national ID.
