Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Performance and Delivery Management in the Executive Office of the President of Kenya Eliud Owalo announced the death of Kenyan legendary footballer Austin Oduor, popularly known as ‘Makamu,’ on Wednesday, October 16.
In a statement, Owalo expressed shock at the death of the former Harambee Stars captain.
“It is with profound shock that I have learned of the sudden death of Kenyan soccer legend, Gor Mahia, and Harambee Stars award-winning captain, Austin “Makamu” Oduor—a soccer idol,” part of the statement read.
Makamu’s brother, Anthony Origi, stated that the deceased fell ill the previous evening and was rushed to the hospital, where he was placed on oxygen but unfortunately passed away.
Austin Oduor Last Moments
Owalo revealed that Makamu had visited his rural home on October 13 before his demise together with other former Harambee Stars players uploading images of the last moments they had together.
Former Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Ababu Namwamba, eulogized the football legend as a decorated Kenyan footballer with exceptional skills.
“Salute to a true legend of our Motherland, the defense maestro Austin Oduor Origi. You graced Kenyan football with your silky skills, lifting the only continental trophy in Kenyan history with K’ogalo (1987 Africa Cup Winners Cup/Mandela Cup).
I am privileged to have called you a friend. Rest well, fine son of Kenya,” Ababu expressed.

Sports journalist, Carol Radull also shared her condolences through her X account, saying, “Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.”
The immediate former treasurer of Gor Mahia FC, Sally Bolo, also paid tribute, saying, “Farewell, legend. Your contributions to Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars will never be forgotten.”

Gordon Onyango, Member of County Assembly for East Asembo Ward, noted that he was recently with Austin Oduor and Eliud Owalo.
“Three days ago, you were full of life, and today you are no more. R.I.P Austin Oduor Makamu, former Gor Mahia Captain. I live for today because tomorrow may never come,”Onyango revealed.

About Austin
Oduor is the father to Arnold Origi, the former Harambee Stars goalkeeper.
He is also the brother to Mike Okoth, father to former Liverpool star, Divock Origi, who represented Harambee Stars in the 1990s and early 2000, featuring in the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations Finals in Tunisia.
