A Kenyan nurse residing in Mombasa County returned to the country from the United Arab Emirates after being named one of the top 10 finalists for the prestigious Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2025. In a statement dated Wednesday, May 28, 2025, Governor Abdulswamad Sherrif Nassir, who welcomed Khadija Mohammed at the airport, stated that her journey is a testament to the power of community-rooted healthcare, resilience, and compassion, emphasizing that Khadija remains Mombasa and Kenya’s undisputed champion.
“Yesterday, we proudly welcomed Nurse Khadija Mohammed back home from the UAE — a true daughter of Mombasa who has made Kenya shine on the global stage! Out of over 100,000 applicants from 199 countries, Khadija emerged among the Top 10 finalists for the prestigious Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2025,” his statement read.
The Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2025 ceremony, which took place in Dubai on Monday, crowned Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti, a Ghanaian, as the winner of the prestigious award, which included a $250,000 prize.
Khadija Mohammed Among Top 10 Finalists in Global Award
The 48-year-old oncology nurse was recognised for her efforts in transforming patient care, pioneering specialist nurse training, and championing equity in cancer outcomes in her home country, Ghana.
Other finalists who made it to the top 10 include Dr. Jed Ray Gengoba Montayre from Hong Kong SAR, Catherine Maree Holliday from Switzerland, Edith Namba from Papua New Guinea, Fitz Gerald Dalina Camacho from the UAE, Dr. Jose Arnold Tariga from the USA, Maheswari Jaganathan from Malaysia, Dr. Sukhpal Kaur from India, and Vibhaben Gunvantbhai Salaliya from India, all recognized for their contributions to nursing.

Khadija Mohammed Juma is a nurse at Tudor Sub-County Hospital in Mombasa and the founder of RedSplash, an initiative that is transforming blood donation in Kenya.
Through a Smart Donor Search algorithm, RedSplash connects donors with patients in real time.
About Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award
She has led over 500 donation drives, collecting more than 25,000 units of blood and saving many lives through these efforts.
Motivated by the heartbreaking loss of her friend’s mother, who passed away due to a delayed blood transfusion, Khadija launched RedSplash, a grassroots initiative that rallies support from schools, mosques, and local communities to dispel misinformation and encourage voluntary blood donation.
