Kenyatta University (KU) is a Kenyan public institution that offers certificate, diploma, degree, master’s, and PhD courses. The University is located 23 Kilometers North of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya on the Thika-Nairobi Superhighway.

KU as is popularly known, has nine schools, including the School of Pure and Applied Sciences, School of Education, School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, and School of Law, Arts and Social Sciences

Others include the school of business, Economic and Tourism, School of Health Sciences, School of Pure and Applied Sciences, School of Engineering and Architecture, graduate school and Digital school of virtual and open learning.

The history of Kenyatta University dates back to 1965 when the British Government handed over the Templer Barracks to the Government of Kenya.

The barracks were converted into a college known as Kenyatta College, which offered secondary and teacher training education leading to the award of Secondary Teacher 1 (S1) and Secondary Teacher Advanced Level (SA) certificates.

Following an Act of Parliament in 1970, Kenyatta College became a constituent college of the University of Nairobi, and its name was changed to Kenyatta University College.

In July 1978, the Faculty of Education of the University of Nairobi was transferred to Kenyatta University College. This made the institution the only one in the country training teachers at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the time.

Kenyatta University College achieved full university status on August 23, 1985, and the establishment act became operational on September 1, 1985. Kenyatta University was inaugurated in December 1985 with three faculties: Education, Science, and Arts.

In 2013, Kenyatta University was granted a Charter in accordance with the provisions of Section 19 of the Universities Act 2012.

The Main campus is situated on a beautiful and serene 1,300 acres piece of land. Two other campuses within Nairobi are the City and Parklands campuses. Campuses in other towns are the Mombasa and Kitui campuses.

Notable alumni of Kenyatta University include First Lady Rachel Ruto, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Mount Kenya University founder Simon Gicharu, and Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura.
