Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General, Collins Oyuu, has spoken about the harrowing road accident he survived on Monday, 16 October morning.
Oyuu was involved in a terrifying accident on the Bondo-Kisumu Road.
Speaking to the press about the incident, Oyuu admitted to still being in shock, recounting the perilous journey.
“I had a dark moment in my life this morning when I was heading to Kisumu. I had a bad accident when I was from my home about 50 kilometers away,” he recalled.
Furthermore, the KNUT boss confirmed that his driver was also in a safe and stable condition, stating that they were both totally out of danger.

Oyuu revealed that the accident occurred when his driver skillfully swerved to avoid hitting a motorbike rider who was transporting four school children.
As a result, he adds that the vehicle lost control, rolling three times before coming to rest upside down.
Moreover, the KNUT secretary general revealed that he and his driver were trapped in the vehicle for approximately 15 minutes before they were rescued and rushed to the hospital.
He added that the situation could have turned tragic if the driver had not made that split-second decision to avoid the rider.
“We could be talking about five fatalities if my driver did not swerve to save those four children and the rider,” Oyuu acknowledged.
KNUT Boss Says Safety Belt Saved His Life
The KNUT boss admitted that emerging unscathed from the accident was nothing short of miraculous, adding that he was saved by a seatbelt.
He said the seatbelt played a crucial role in preventing him from being ejected from the vehicle during the tumultuous accident.
“I am doing better but still in shock. I had tied my seatbelt and it held me when the accident occurred, ” he said.
Reflecting on the gravity of the situation, Oyuu pointed out the extent of the damage to their vehicle, saying, “The vehicle is badly damaged, and I thank God we are alive.”

Nonetheless, several KNUT officials, led by executive secretary David Obuon, visited Oyuu at the hospital, offering their support during this trying time.
Moreover, Oyuu expressed gratitude to the family members, union members and officials for their prayers and hospital visits.
He has since assured them that he is ready to resume his duties as KNUT Secretary General.

The vehicle veered off the road and rolled several times at Yago, Kombewa in Kisumu County.
