Live Updates: Martha Karua Spotted in Nairobi CBD Amid Ongoing Nane Nane Protests

As anticipation grows across the country over the Gen Z-led Nane Nane protests, security has been beefed up in various parts of the country, especially in Nairobi CBD, where the demonstrations are scheduled to take place. 

Armed police officers have been stationed at different parts of the city with no action from the protestors being witnessed yet. 

The Kenyan youth have vowed to fight for good governance by sustaining protests across the country, until their issues and demands are addressed by President William Ruto’s administration.

Earlier, the Acting Inspector General (IG) of the National Police Service (NPS), Gilbert Masengeli, stated that criminals are planning to infiltrate the demonstrations. Therefore, he ordered the National Police Service to beef up security in the flagged locations.

Here’s is a real-time update on latest events in the ‘Nane Nane protests:

3:10 pm: Narc Kenya Party Leader Martha Karua spotted in Nairobi CBD amid the ongoing Nane Nane protests. 

2:50 pm: Police officers arrest a group of lawyers joining protests in Nairobi CBD. 

12:40 pm: Journalist Cecilia Ngujiri has been injured by police while covering Nane Nane protests in Nairobi CBD. 

Photos seen by the Kenya Times show other media practitioners helping Cecilia to walk to a secure location as she cries in pain. 

12:00 am: Various areas in Kisumu have remained calm with major streets in the CBD showing no signs of protests. 

Additionally, there is no heavy police presence in the area and many shops have remained open as businesses continue.

Protests prone areas like Kondele has also remained quiet with not much activity.

Speaking to the press, the residents have said that they are waiting on the call for protests from Azimio leader Raila Odinga, adding that the CSs appointments had quelled the rage of the residents. 

11:40 am: Police officers have arrested several protestors outside Java House along Kimathi Street in Nairobi CBD.

Some of the protestors have been protected by Java employees who have accommodated them inside the establishment. 

11:00 am: Plain clothed police officers have arrested several protestors along Tom Mboya Street, forced them into a police van and driven away. 

10:30 am: Police lob teargas at a group of protestors at the Kenya National Archives. 

9:38 am: Interior Ministry has issued regulations for protestors warning that demonstrations must end at 6:00 pm.

Protestors have been asked to remain peaceful, avoid carrying offensive weapons and not breach public order by intimidating others. 

8:50 am: Police lob teargas at a crowd that was forming in Nairobi CBD. 

8: 30 am: Water cannons have been stationed at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC). 

Anti-riot police officers have also been deployed along the Harambee Avenue while others have been stationed along Kenyatta Avenue. 

Also, a truck full of anti-riot police officers has been stationed at the Uhuru Highway and Haille Selassie Avenue intersection. 

8:00 am: Several police trucks have been stationed in different parts of Nairobi CBD. Officers are armed with batons, teargas canister launchers, guns, shields and other police gear. 

Some of the officers deployed have been spotted with masks, while others have covered their faces with different scarfs. 

At the same time, police on horses are patrolling various areas in the CBD especially areas around parliament. Access to parliament and its environs is limited with some roads leading to the establishment closed.
