The Acting Inspector General (IG) of the National Police Service (NPS), Gilbert Masengeli, cautioned the public that criminals are planning to infiltrate the Nane Nane demonstrations (#nanenanemarch) scheduled for August 8, 2024.
Speaking during a press briefing held at NPS Headquarters in Nairobi, Masengeli warned of security threats in the country during the march
He said the criminals have plans to take advantage of the march to commit further crimes.
“Our intelligence report indicated that there are security threats to the country with criminals planning to infiltrate tomorrow’s demonstration and commit further crimes,” he said.
Masengeli stated that the National Police Service has beefed up security in the flagged locations. He added that those planning to exercise their rights of participation in public demonstrations should comply with the attendant laws.
“In anticipation, we have ensured adequate deployment of security personnel,” he said. The acting police boss called upon members of the public to be extra vigilant and avoid crowded places.
“Members of the public are advised to take extra caution while in crowded areas that are likely to turn into riots,” Masengeli said.
IG Warn Against Protected Areas
Besides, the police warned demonstrators to be peaceful or face the full force of the law. Masengeli advised protesters to avoid violating the Protected Areas Act.
“We also wish to caution members of the public against contravening the Kenya Civil Aviation Act and Protected Areas Act by avoiding trespass of protected areas such as Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and State House lodges,” he said.
The Police Chief also commended all police officers wherever they are serving our country, and beyond, for their dedication to duty, appreciating that officers are serving under very difficult conditions.
He urged them to discharge their constitutional mandate devoid of fear or favor but also to exercise restraint.

#Nanenanemarch
Kenyan youth (Gen Z) have been mobilizing online under the hashtag #NaneNaneMarch in preparation for the planned demos.
Nane is a Kiswahili word meaning eight, hence the name #NaneNaneMarch which means a march on August 8 (eighth of the eighth).
Posters that have been circulating online indicate that the march is meant to push for reforms and the resignation of President William Ruto.

According to the posters, Gen Z will convene at Nairobi’s CBD with placards demanding Ruto’s resignation.
Gen Z became popular after a series of past anti-finance bill protests. President Ruto was forced to drop the Finance Bill 2024 and dissolve his cabinet due to pressure from the protesting youth.
