Kenya’s smartphone market has been dominated by Android, largely due to the availability of affordable devices.

According to StatCounter data, the mobile operating system market share in Kenya showed Android at over 92% and iOS at around 6% in May 2026.

Further, a 2025 survey by the cybersecurity company Cloudflare found that Android accounted for 94.2 percent of smartphones in Kenya, leaving Apple’s iOS with a much smaller share of the market.

Android’s dominance was largely driven by the availability of affordable smartphones across different price segments.

Unlike iOS, which was limited to Apple devices, Android was used by numerous manufacturers, giving consumers a wider selection of handsets that catered to different budgets and preferences.

Android Remained Kenya’s Most Popular Mobile Operating System

The data further showed that in Kenya, brands such as TECNO, Infinix, Samsung, OPPO, and Xiaomi have expanded Android’s reach by offering smartphones ranging from entry-level models to premium devices.

The Cloudflare survey attributed Android’s dominance in Kenya largely to the availability of affordable smartphones across different price segments.

While Android devices were available for as little as KSh3,000, new iPhones with 256GB of storage retailed for more than KSh126,000, placing them beyond the reach of many consumers.

The survey noted that Android’s compatibility with low-cost smartphones made it the preferred operating system for many Kenyans seeking affordable access to digital services.

“With the majority of the population seeking cost-effective solutions to access the digital world, Android’s compatibility with budget-friendly smartphones has made it a household name,” part of the report read.

Its extensive app ecosystem also contributed to its widespread adoption across the country.

Customization

According to SurgeTechKnow one of the biggest differences between Android and iPhone is how much control users have over their devices.

Android gives users greater freedom to personalize their smartphones, from changing home screen layouts and widgets to selecting default apps and installing custom launchers.

The iPhone, on the other hand, offers a more uniform experience. While Apple has added features such as widgets, customizable lock screens, and Focus modes in recent years, it continues to limit system-level changes to maintain consistency across devices.

For users who value personalization, Android offers more flexibility. Those who prefer a straightforward and predictable experience may find the iPhone more appealing.
