Martha Karua has criticized Samia Suluhu’s government following the death of politician Kibao. The recent killing of Tanzanian senior Chadema Opposition Party official, Ally Mohammed Kibao, on Sunday, September 8, 2024, has triggered a new wave of solidarity and concern among prominent members of the Pan African Opposition Leaders Solidarity Network, including Karua from Narc-Kenya.
“We condemn the murder, abductions, and all forms of political harassment against opposition leaders in the Republic of Tanzania. We urge the government to uphold, respect, and protect the human rights of its citizens, including those in the political opposition. Furthermore, we demand an immediate end to any further acts of political intimidation,” the statement read in part.
Reflection on Previous Instances
Karua also drew attention to previous instances of police-enforced intimidation in Tanzania. The statement noted, “On August 12, 2024, police officers used excessive force to disrupt the Chadema Youth League’s celebrations during International Youth Day in Mbeya.”

She continued, “This was followed by the arrest of hundreds of youths, party members, and leaders, including Tundu Lissu, Chadema Vice Chair Mainland; John Mnyika, the Party’s Secretary General; Joseph Mbilinyi, Nyasa Regional Chairman; and many other Chadema officials from the Nyasa region, such as Moza Ally, Twaha Mwaipaya, Nice Gisunte, and Appolinary Boniface.”
The statement also revealed the arrest of Chadema National Chairman Freeman Mbowe and Chadema National Youth Chairman John Pambalu. Their arrest occurred at Songwe Airport while they were in the VIP lounge en route to Mbeya to address the situation with the detained party members. The press release by Karua indicated that they were harassed and assaulted during these unjustified arrests.
Kibao’s Murder Occurs a Year to the General Elections.
Kibao’s murder occurred just a year before the general elections. Karua has thus called on Tanzania to ensure justice is served. “With the general elections in Tanzania just a year away, all parties should be free to campaign across the country and seek votes,” Karua stated.
She further emphasized, “Tanzania, as the host of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the East African Community, and the East African Court of Justice, should lead in upholding not only its constitution but also the principles of these esteemed institutions.”
Karua concluded by calling for prompt, independent, and transparent investigations to hold those responsible accountable and prevent further violations of rights.
