Ministry of Education Announces Applications for 2026 Special Needs Course

The Ministry of Education has announced the opportunities for the Special Needs Education (SNE) Diploma full-time in-service course at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) for the year 2026.

In a notice signed by Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok, the Ministry of Education stated that the in-service course will run for 2 years.

All serving Teachers Service Commission (TSC) interested in the course have been informed that application forms are now available.

KISE Opens Applications 

The forms can be downloaded from the Ministry of Education website www.education.go.ke or obtained from the nearest County Director of Education (CDE) or Sub-County Director of Education (SCDE) offices.

The areas of specialization this year are the education of learners with visual impairments, physical impairments, intellectual and developmental disabilities, hearing impairments, autism, and deafblindness.

Completed application forms must be submitted in person to the SCDE by 20th April, 2026.

The SCDE office will forward all applications to Jogoo House B, Room 710, 618/19, by 2nd May, 2026.

Requirements for Application

The Ministry of Education has listed the requirements for admission to the 2026 full-time in-service SNE Diploma course at KISE.

Applicants must be under 50 years of age, hold a P1 certificate or have earned P1 through promotion via Teacher Proficiency Courses, be current TSC teachers with at least 5 years’ experience, and be Kenyan citizens.

During registration, each applicant must present the following documents in person:

  • Application forms completed in the applicant’s own handwriting. (This does not apply to visually impaired applicants.)
  • Original and certified copies of academic certificates
  • Original and certified copy of the TSC letter of appointment
  • Original and certified copy of their professional teacher training certificate
  • Original and a certified copy of their national identity card or passport. (Both sides of the ID card are required)

  • Color passport-size photo taken within the last three months
  • Original and certified copies of other relevant testimonials

After completing the application and registration, successful candidates will receive an SMS with instructions for obtaining their admission letters.

The Ministry has also clarified that the registration exercise is free of charge.

About KISE

KISE is mandated to train personnel in special needs education, conduct research, assess children with special needs for educational placement, design, produce, repair, and maintain specialized teaching and learning materials and other assistive devices for persons with special needs and disabilities.

KISE’s mission is to foster an inclusive society by developing human capital, conducting research, offering functional assessments, and creating assistive technologies.

The institution also focuses on early interventions and rehabilitation services to address the unique needs of learners with special needs.
