Mombasa Cement Limited owner Hasmukh Patel popularly Known as Hasuu, has died.
The industrialist and philanthropist passed away at the age of 58 in Mombasa after a short illness, as confirmed by family spokesman Samir Bhalo who is also Tudor Member of County Assembly.
Bhalo mentioned that Patel had been ill for two days, complaining of stomach pains. The billionaire has left behind a widow and three children. Samir said.
“He was rushed to Premier Hospital where he was confirmed dead at the accidents and emergency department. We will confirm the burial arrangements later,” he said.
The news of his demise was also confirmed by Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, who expressed his condolences in a statement on August 29.
Mombasa and Kilifi Governors Mourn Hasmukh Patel
In his message, the governor said Patel will be remembered for his generous support of the underprivileged and his active participation in social affairs in Mombasa.
“We have learned with sadness of the passing of businessman Hasmukh “Hasuu” Patel of Mombasa Cement Limited in Mombasa,” he said.
“I take this opportunity on behalf of the County Government of Mombasa to offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the departed. We will stand with you during this difficult time.”

His Kilifi counterpart, Governor Gideon Mung’aro, described Patel as a respected family man who consistently supported and cared for his community.
“It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of my dear friend and Mombasa Cement company owner, Hasmukh Patel, also known as Asuu Patel,” Mung’aro said.
“My thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones, friends, and colleagues as they navigate through this difficult time. Rest in peace, my friend.”
Hasu established Mombasa Cement in 2007, and by 2018, it had captured 15.2% of the cement market with its Nyumba brand, making it the second-largest player after Lafarge Holding’s Bamburi Cement.
Patel was also the director of Corrugated Iron Sheets in Kenya and Tororo Cement, based in Uganda.

He started Hasmukh Patel Foundation, which provided scholarships to needy students across the country and has sponsored various charitable causes across multiple industries.
As a dedicated philanthropist, Patel has been a strong advocate for environmental conservation.
One of his most notable initiatives involved transforming the Kibarani Dumpsite in Mombasa into a park, ridding it of the foul stench that welcomed all visitors to the city.
The philanthropist contributed Ksh700 million towards the conversion of the dumpsite to a park.

He also established the Sahajanand Feeding Centre in 2008 to provide meals for thousands of underprivileged individuals, along with the Sahajanand Special School, which offers basic needs and education to over 5,000 pupils.
In addition to these initiatives, Hasu has engaged in various philanthropic activities, including donating over 50 lorries for garbage collection, providing clean water in slums using trucks, and constructing shelters at locations like the Likoni ferry.
Patel also built concrete fences around schools and police stations, demonstrating his commitment to improving community welfare and infrastructure.
For his efforts, Patel received the Order of the Burning Spear in 2021 and was appointed as a Kenya Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) Director.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in business and business management from Kingston University in London, United Kingdom.
