The founder and Chairman of Radio Lake Victoria Dr Obiero Ong’ang’a is Dead. According to the family, he passed away on August 24, 2024.
The 76-year-old was born on November 10, 1947, in Homa Bay County and passed away while in Kisumu.
Radio Lake Victoria 92.1 FM is a regional Radio Station which was established in 2005, covering the whole of western Kenya
In the announcement, the family noted that the birth of Ong’ang’a was marked by a profound sense of destiny as he symbolized the continuity of the community after the passing of a great chief.
“He was born at Shirati Health Facility on the day the community mourned the loss of a respected and admired chief, Chief Obiero.
“In their grief, the community found hope in the birth of this baby boy, seeing in him the continuity of the leadership and charm that Chief Obiero had embodied. They named him Obiero, honoring the chief and blessing the newborn with a name that carried the weight of legacy and expectation,” stated the announcement.

The Education of Dr Obiero Ong’ang’a
He began his education at Kiabuya Primary School, then moved on to Godbura Primary School in Homabay county.
He then proceeded to Tonga Secondary School and Thika High School for his high school education.
Additionally, Ong’ang’a attained a Bachelor of Education from Spicer Memorial College in India, focusing on Education, Botany, and Zoology.
Later, he furthered his studies with a postgraduate diploma in curriculum development from the University of Nairobi and a master’s degree in international administration from the School for International Training in the USA.
In 2001, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration from Washington International University.
Career of the Founder and Chairman of Radio Lake Victoria
Between 1998 and 2001, he served as the Executive Chairman Regional Council of the East African Communities Organization for the Management of Lake Victoria Resources.
He was a Board Member of the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife – Giraffe Centre between 2002 and 2004.
Moreover, he served as a steering committee member of LakeNet between 2001 and 2007.
Also, Dr Obiero Ong’ang’a served as a Member of the Board of Trustees for the Kenya Wildlife Service between 2008 and 2014.
His longest serving position was as the Executive Director of Osienala- Friends of Lake Victoria, where he served from 1999.
“As the Executive Director of OSIENALA, he worked tirelessly to promote sustainable development in the Lake Victoria Basin, impacting millions of lives across East Africa.
“His leadership extended to international linkages, where he represented Africa in various global environmental forums, advocating for the preservation of our natural resources,” his family stated.

Family and Eulogy
Aside from his work, he was a devoted family man and is succeeded by four children who he raised with his wife Regina Obiero.
His children are Velma, Brian, Charlotte, and James Paul Miller.
His grandchildren are Eliakim Obiero Ong’ang’a, Ira Maisiba, Berry Maisiba, Felix Ong’ang’a, Regina Chitayi Oluoch, Donald Anis Oluoch, Nailah Ong’ang’a, and James Ong’ang’a.
The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has eulogized him as a philanthropist and an icon of economic empowerment.
“Dr Ong’ang’a will be remembered for his immense contribution to media development and dedicated service to the community through the power of community media.
“He will be also remembered as a philanthropist per excellence and an icon of economic empowerment. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends during this difficult time,” stated MCK.
