Rafiki Pesa hit maker and legendary gospel singer Shari Martin has passed away. Shari died on Friday, August 2, 2024, while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
His fellow musician, Douglas Jiveti, announced Shari’s death on August 6 on his social media account.
Martin had been ill and hospitalized for about a week at KNH, where he succumbed to his illness.
“Pioneer Gospel musician Shari Martin has sadly passed on. Very gifted musician: Creative composer, strong lyrics, wonderful voice. May God rest his soul in eternal peace,” he said.
The news was also confirmed by Martin’s close female friend and fellow artist, who identified herself only as Pauline.
According to Pauline, the singer fell ill on July 27, 2024, and was rushed to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia.
“Martin was recovering well and was supposed to be discharged. But he developed breathing difficulties. Unfortunately, he did not make it and passed away on August 2, 2024. We later learned that he had been battling the condition for a while and had not sought any medical attention until it became severe,” said Pauline.

Shari Martin is celebrated for his timeless gospel tracks, including ‘Yesu Ndio Commando’, ‘Rafiki Pesa’ which was very popular in the early 90s, ‘Happy New Year’, and ‘Tangazo la Ajabu’.
His other songs include Mambo ya Dunia, Chistmas, Wanadamu ni Waongo.
The legendary musician career began in the early 1990s, and he quickly rose to prominence with his powerful lyrics and distinctive voice.

Martin’s journey into music was unconventional. He initially trained as a chef and pursued the profession successfully before dedicating himself entirely to gospel music.
His decision to switch careers was driven by his passion for music and a desire to inspire through his songs.
He had notable connections with Kenyan political figures, including former presidents Daniel Arap Moi and Uhuru Kenyatta. Martin first met President Moi while still a student at Tarasa High School in Tana River County.
This relationship significantly boosted his early career, with President Moi personally financing Martin’s education after being impressed by his performance at a regional event.
The late also shared a compelling story about how retired President Uhuru Kenyatta played a key role in rescuing him from homelessness in 2014.

Fans, Kenyans, and musicians across the country have mourned Shari while reminiscing about his impact on gospel music.
“I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Shari Martin. His music, particularly songs like Rafiki Pesa, Christmas, and especially Tangazo la Ajabu, has been a profound source of inspiration in my own Music journey,” song writer and gospel artist, Daddy Owen posted.

Royal Media Service (RMS) Journalist, Mkalla Mwambodze posted, “This man had a great voice and was one of the first popular gospel musicians in Kenya during Moi’ s time. It is sad to learn that he is no more. RIP Sode Shari Martin.”
“When I was newly born again in 1999 Shari Martin’s songs really edified and strengthened my faith. My brother Bob Arita used to give me the tapes which really blessed my life. I am saddened to hear about his demise. His ministry impacted many of us. Fare thee well Shari,” Arita Coaches posted.
