The Atheists in Kenya Society has conveyed its condolences to Magistrate Monica Kivuti’s family while raising critical questions regarding the motivations behind the tragic event.
The shooting of Makadara Law Courts Magistrate Monica Kivuti has left the nation in shock, casting a dark shadow over the judiciary.
While the specifics of the case remain unclear, the society suggests that the motivations could be rooted in a complex mix of social, political, and personal factors.
“Perhaps the perpetrator harbored deep-seated resentment or grievances against the judicial system, feeling wronged or failed by the institution they targeted,” the society noted, adding that speculations extend to the possibility of the shooter acting on behalf of a larger criminal enterprise, aimed at intimidating and undermining the courts’ authority.
Atheists on Other Questions
Another theory pointed out that a disgruntled litigants could have been out to seek revenge against Kivuti for a ruling against them.
Regardless of the exact reasons, the Atheists in Kenya Society emphasized that the shooting represents a grave attack on the rule of law in Kenya.

“Monica Kivuti was simply carrying out her duties to the best of her abilities,” the statement continues, “and her murder is a chilling reminder of the risks and dangers that judicial officers can face in the line of duty.”
The society calls for enhanced security measures and protections for members of the judiciary as the country grapples with the aftermath of this act of violence against a judicial officer.
Death of Monica Kivuti
According to a police statement released on Thursday, June 13, a 55-year-old OCS from Lodiani shot at Magistrate Kivuti who had declined a request to release his wife through cash bail.

The accused, identified as Jeniffer Kabiru, was facing charges of obtaining money by false pretense amounting to Ksh2.9 million.
Further, police stated that two other officers who tried to remove the Magistrate from the scene and secure the courtroom also sustained gunshot wounds.
“He entered inside the court through the magistrate’s door and fired shots towards the magistrate injuring her on the chest and left hip,” said CJ Koome in a previous statement.
Following the incident, CJ Koome ordered that the Makadara Law Courts remain closed until Monday, June 17 for security reinforcement.
