Monica Kivuti was the principal magistrate Makadara Law Courts at the time of her death. She was shot by Londiani OCS Samson Kipruto during a live court proceeding on Thursday13th June 2024.
Monica succumbed to gunshot injuries on June 15, while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital, with the Chief Justice Martha Koome announcing her death.

Following her demise, the Judiciary declared June 18 the official mourning day, suspending all court sessions to honor Monica who died while serving justice.
”Celebrating the life of Hon Monicah Kivuti. The day will be observed in every court. the judiciary family in your nearest court station at 10am,” read part of the statement.

The late Monica Njoki Kivuti-Kang’ata was born on June 12, 1978, to the late Samuel and Niceta Kivuti.
She was raised in Embu within a devout Christian family, which guided her throughout life.

Likewise, she was the fourth-born among her siblings which include late Sophia Kivuti, Robert Ndigwa, Prof. Lucy K. Bitok, Gladys Munyi, Thomas Gitonga, Amos Mugambi, and Rose Kivuti.

In addition, the late magistrate was devoted wife to Mutimu Kang’ata and a loving mother to Josephine Wanjiru, Michelle Menyi, and Elyanna Wanjiru.
She was also a cherished grandmother to Melody Wanjiru. Her family was her sanctuary, and she found immense joy in her roles within it.
Education
Monica started her education at Gatunduri Primary School and continued through St. Catherine High School.
She graduated from Moi University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Law and was admitted to the bar in 2009.
Later, she advanced her education earning a master’s in international studies from the University of Nairobi in 2013, supplemented by numerous courses in law, diplomacy, international relations, and arbitration.
Monica ‘s Career
Monica started her professional journey at Direct Line Insurance before joining the judiciary in 2013 as a Resident Magistrate.
According to the Judiciary, her exemplary service saw her stationed at Kiambu, Baricho, and Makadara Law Courts.
She was appointed Principal Magistrate at Makadara Law Courts in February 2024.
Likewise, she was known for impeccable moral compass and dedication to her work and community, Monica actively engaged in Church social responsibility (CSR) activities at her church, ICC, and served on several boards.

Monica’s legacy of love, dedication, and integrity remains etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Moreover, she served in the outreach committee of the Nairobi Chapel under the Logos scholarship committee for the needy children in the church.
