Morara Arrest: Gen Zs Threaten to Hold Protests

A section of Kenyans across different social media platforms have started an online campaign dubbed ‘Free Morara Kebaso’ following his arrest on the night of Monday, September 30.

Kenyans on X mounted pressure on the government free the vocal lawyer, threatening to hold demonstrations on Tuesday October 1.

In a viral poster shared across social media platforms, Gen Z have been urged to carry placards, a handkerchief, and a bottle of water.

Protesters were advised not to hurl stones during the demonstrations but to use their phones to record the events that will transpire.

Additionally, they are encouraged to wear black, white, or red attire.

Sentiments on Morara arrest

A social media influencer by the name Benard Kavuli vowed to take to the streets on October 1 until Morara is released.

“Enough is Enough! I will be on the streets tomorrow. We shall occupy everywhere,” Kavuli vowed.

Lawyer Willis Otieno condemned the arrest of Morara attributing it to his outspoken criticism of bad governance. 

“How does locking up Morara assist Ruto uphold the promises he made to Kenyans? Morara did not compel him to start white elephant ventures. It is time for Ruto to accept responsibility for his actions and cease prosecuting individuals who speak out against poor government,” Willis stated.

Similarly, Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino also weighed in.

He called on the government to stop arbitrary arrests on those who are criticizing them but instead focus on delivering their mandate to citizens.

Meanwhile, Activist Hanifa Farsafi vowed to camp at the location where it was believed Morara was being held by the police despite the challenges they faced the previous day with her fellow activists.

“Now, we all head to where they’re keeping Morara. They threw teargas yesterday and it was dark and raining and we were few. Let’s assemble,” Hanifa urged.

 Why Kebaso was arrested

The lawyer turned was arrested while in his office in Kahawa Sukari and logged into a Subaru Forester KCQ 166J. 

It is reported that Morara was arrested for allegedly defrauding Kenyans and hurling insults at President William Ruto.

Before his arrest Morara had posted a seven-minute video on X calling for the arrest of Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir.

Morara has been a fierce critic of the Kenya Kwanza Government, castigating them for launching development projects that have cost taxpayers a lot of money, yet the majority of these projects have stalled.

The lawyer has been traversing different counties, exposing the alleged stalled projects and accusing government officials of diverting public funds for their own personal benefit.

Morara’s whereabouts are currently unknown, with the Busia Senator claiming on September 30 that he was being held at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Kiambu Road.
