Nairobi Water Announces 30Hrs Supply Interruption in 11 Areas

Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company explained that shutdown will involve carrying out scheduled maintenance at the Kiambu reservoir.

The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) has announced a planned water supply interruption in Nairobi City County and its environs from 6.00am Thursday, October 5 to 12.00pm Friday, October 6.

In a notice on Tuesday, October 3, NCWSC stated that this will be because of a complete shutdown of the Ngethu Water Treatment Plant.

“The shutdown will facilitate the repair of a major leakage on the raw water pipeline between Matara raw water chamber and ngethu water treatment plant,” read the notice in part.

Further, the company explained that shutdown will involve carrying out scheduled maintenance at the Kiambu reservoir.

This NCWSC says is in preparation for the anticipated El Nino rains as predicted by the weather man.

The whole of Central Business District, University of Nairobi Main Campus, Coca Cola Factory, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), EPZ-Athi river, Mlolongo area, Gatundu and Kiambu town will be affected by the shutdown.

Additionally, water supply in areas along Mombasa Road: South B, South C and the neighborhoods including Embakasi area will be interrupted.

“Areas along Juja road: Mlango Kubwa, the whole of Mathare, Eastleigh Airforce Base, Huruma, Kariobangi, Pangani and Eastleigh will be affected,” read the notice.

Other Estates to Experience supply Interruption

Also in the list are estates along Jogoo road like Maringo, Buruburu and surroundings areas including Bahati.

Moreover, areas along Outer-ring Road including Baba Dogo, Dandora, Dandora KCC factory, Umoja Estate 1 and 2, Donholm, Fedha, Tassia, Avenue Park and Nyayo Embakasi will also experience the interruption.

In addition, the planned shutdown will affect the whole Industrial area and estates along Kangundo road including Ruai, Kayole, Komorock, Mwiki and Njiru.

Furthermore, areas along Thika road: Kenya Breweries, Kenyatta University, Githurai, Zimmerman, Kahawa west, Kahawa Barracks, Kasarani, Mwiki, Kahawa Sukari, Kahawa Wendani, Brookside Dairies, Garden Estate and Thome Estate will supply interruptions within the period.

Areas along Limuru road will also be affected, this includes Parklands, Ngara area, Aga Khan Hospital, University of Nairobi – School of Law and City Park Area, Gigiri, United Nations – Gigiri and Muthaiga.

Additionally, the interruption will also affect areas along Naivasha and Kikuyu Roads, Kawangware, Riruta/Satelite, Uthiru and Ndwaru Road.

Further, estates along James Gichuru Road, Langata road (Madaraka, Karen, Lang’ata and Kibra) and Waiyaki way, Riverside, Westlands, Lavington, Kilimani and Kileleshwa will be affected.

“Whilst every effort will be made to restore the supply of water as soon as possible, we request all customers in the affected areas to use water sparingly during the period of interruption,” said NCWSC.

About Nairobi Water Company

NCWSC was incorporated in December 2003 under the Companies Act cap 486.

It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nairobi City County with the main responsibility of providing and managing water and sewerage services in Nairobi, while the asset holding body, Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) is charged with the responsibility of developing key water and sewerage infrastructure. 

The Company is mandated to provide clean water and sewage services to the residents of Nairobi City County, in a financially sustainable manner and within Government regulations. 

Nonetheless, water remains a perennial problem in Nairobi, with millions of residents buying water every day.
