The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) has issued an alert on a massive water shortage across several estates triggered by a national blackout.

According to a notice issued by the company’s managing director, when power resumed in the capital city following the blackout on August 30, the facilities of the company were tampered with.

Further, he explained that a highly specialized transformer at a Gigiri Pumping Station failed to power up.

“When power resumed at 5.30am, our 5mva 66/3.3kva transformer step down at Gigiri Pumping Station failed to energize.

“This being a highly specialized equipment we sought technical assistance from Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) for fault diagnosis,” stated the director.

KPLC Steps in After Blackout

Consequently, after seeking the intervention of the power company, the water company and the power engineers began working on fixing the damaged equipment.

Therefore, Nairobi Water has indicated that it is unable to pump water “from the Gigiri reservoir to Kabete reservoir to augment water supply from Sasumua and Ruiru dam which serves west of Uhuru highway.”

The following Nairobi estates will therefore experience water supply disruptions, including supply fail or low pressures, until the matter is sorted.

Areas along Limuru Road including Parklands, Ngara area, Aga Khan hospital, University of Nairobi – School of Law and City Park Area, Gigiri, United Nation- Gigiri.

Additionally New Muthaiga area, Nyali and red hill are affected.

On the other hand, areas along Naivasha Road and Kikuyu Road including Kawangware, Riruta/Satellite, Uthiru, Ndwaru Road are affected by the water supply disruptions.

Also, areas along James Gichuru Road, Langata Road and Waiyaki way, Riverside, Westlands, Lavington, Kilimani and Kileleshwa are affected.

Residents of estates along Lang’ata Road including Madaraka, Karen, Lang’ata and Kibra and parts of South C Estates should also brace themselves for water shortages or low pressure.

Nairobi Water Earlier Notice on Water Shortage

In an earlier statement on August 28, the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company announced an interruption in water supply as a result of a service shutdown due to vandalism.

The statement further noted that the disruption is as a result of vandalism of the Sasumua dam water treatment pipeline to Kabete Water Works.

“Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Ltd. would like to inform its esteemed customers of a service shut down that will interrupt water supply in parts of the city due to vandalism of the Sasumua dam water treatment pipeline to Kabete Water Works at Kanunga area near Nazareth hospital in Kiambu on the night of 27th August 2024,” read part of the statement.

Sasumua dam water pipeline was commissioned in 1956, covering a length of 56km and it brings 61,000m3/day of water to Kabete reservoir.
