The late Njambi Koikai shared a heartfelt message asking for help from Kenyan leaders- specifically to President William Ruto on May 19, 2024, before he left for his state visit to the United States.
In a statement, Njambi urged the president to make major investments in the health sector similar to the ones made in Atalanta, Georgia which has advanced with medical apparatus and specialists to curb dangerous conditions like Endometriosis.
“This is a sincere and heartfelt call of help to a few Kenyan leaders but allow me to address this to President Ruto as he makes his state visit to the US. Mr. President, one of the thematic areas in your visit is investment in health,” Njambi said.
Njambi further explained the dangers of the disease which she developed at an early age of 15 when she started getting her periods.
Njambi Struggle With the Disease
The disease, which is a painful condition in which a tissue that is similar to the inner lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus saw her undergo more than 21 surgeries.
The rogue tissue can attach to organs such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, or bowel, causing inflammation, scarring, and adhesions.
“In my case, that lining grew on my lungs causing my lungs to collapse every month and countless number of surgeries. It took me 17 years to get a diagnosis. The damage was caused due to late diagnosis and lack of treatment in our country,” Njambi said.

She further explained how the disease spread through her body after surgeries in the US causing her organs to shift to the left side of the body.
In her statement, Njambi asked the president to meet with Hillary Clinton, the Executive producer of the award-winning documentary Below the Belt, to discuss the matter.
She also mentioned Sen Warren who had been at the forefront of fighting for more funding into research for Endometriosis as well as leading awareness causes amongst her colleagues.
Njambi Koikai: Women Leaders in Kenya Are Silent
Additionally, she stated that one in 10 women leaders in the country is diagnosed with the disease and yet none has spoken about it.
“Mr. President, take out of 10 women you know of some in Parliament, some in the Senate, some within the parties, 1 has Endometriosis. In both the opposition and the ruling party, this has been a silent issue amongst the women leaders,” she said.
Moreover, she explained to the president that it would be a game-changer for the Kenyan delegation to visit the Centre for Endometrioses in Atlanta, Georgia and later send our specialist for further training.

She said the disease has no cure and needs a skilled surgery treatment known as excision and it might be the reason most women are infertile since the treatment is expensive.
“This disease takes hundreds of millions of dollars to treat and manage after years of damage to various organs of the body and side effects. This is a humble request to visit the above-mentioned to help in the thematic agenda of healthcare.
There are more than 100 fundraisers currently running for women and young girls fighting for their lives in seeking help and this runs to more than 100 million dollars collectively. Hear our cries and help the women of this country,” Njambi concluded.
