Popular Kenyans Who Lost Their Jobs in 2024

The year 2024 proved to be a year of unforeseen tribulations for some notable Kenyans, when several personalities lost their jobs across many sectors.

This list includes politicians, media personalities and corporate leaders who were either fired, retired or ran out of contract in their respective positions.

Here are some of Kenya’s household names who, in 2024 found them out of employment

1.Rigathi Gachagua– The former Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua is one of the biggest losers in 2024.

The National Assembly and Senate impeached Gachagua from his position as DP.

The Court later lifted the conservatory orders which paved the way for the swearing of Kithure Kindiki as his successor.

He was later removed from his position as UDA deputy party leader and replaced by Kindiki again.

2.Pastor Dorcas Rigathi – The wife of the deputy president automatically occupied the office of the second lady.

Although President William Ruto proposed the elimination of funding for the offices of the First and Second Lady, the position still comes with a lot of other benefits.

Dorcas ceased to hold the office when Gachagua was impeached.Dr Joyce Kindiki took over after Kindiki’s swearing in.

3.Salim Swaleh– He was removed from his position as Director of Press Service at the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

He was among the suspects arrested in connection with a complex fraud scheme amounting to Ksh5.8 million.

Other Popular Kenyans Who Lost Were Remove from Their Positions

4.Cleophas Malala– Malala was ousted as UDA Secretary General in August after weeks of intense wrangles in the party.

Malala was kicked out of the position and replaced by Hassan Omar who was the party’s Vice Chairperson.

5.Nyambane – Walter Onchonga Mong’are popularly known as Nyambane was removed from his position as the Director of Programmes (Advocacy & Outreach) at the Office of the PCS and the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs in April.

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Dr Korir Sing’Oei made the announcement to all directors, heads of mission, and departments within the Ministry.

6.Aisha Jumwa– Aisha Jumwa is a close ally of President Ruto.

She served as the CS for Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage in Kenya until July 2024 when Ruto dissolved the cabinet.

Jumwa was not reappointed in the broad-based cabinet and is yet to get a government role.

7.Susan Nakhumicha – Nakhumicha was also left out after the dissolution of cabinet and formation of the new one.

She served as the health CS role and was succeeded by Deborah Barasa.

Other Big Names Who Lost Their Positions

8.Nick Mwendwa– Nick Mwendwa stayed out of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president race for the first time since 2016.

Mwendwa opted to deputize to Doris Petra in the race after serving for two terms.

9.Japhet Koome– Japhet Koome resigned as the Inspector General of the National Police Service following mounting pressure over police brutality during the anti-finance bill protests.

10.Kisii Deputy Governor– DG Robert Monda was impeached in March after the majority of Senators voted to uphold the four charges against him by the members of the Kisii County Assembly. 

He faced charges of gross violation of the constitution, abuse of office, gross misconduct and crimes under national law.
