President William Ruto has ordered the telecommunication giant, Safaricom PLC to suspend the pay bill numbers for 58 betting firms.
In a statement on Tuesday, April 29, the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) which operates under the Executive Office of the President said the unauthorized betting websites have sparked public outrage by operating without approval from the Board.
The Board said it has taken note of complaints from concerned citizens regarding these platforms, which exploit users by demanding money through betting schemes.

“The Board has determined that necessary measures must be taken against the listed websites, including their immediate shutdown,” read the statement in part.
“Additionally, by copy of this letter, Safaricom PLC Limited is hereby instructed to suspend all associated Pay Bill numbers with immediate effect.”
Investigations by the Board revealed that these fraudulent sites scam bettors by accepting deposits via pay bill numbers or STK push services, only to withhold payouts.

Additionally, the platforms violate the gaming regulations set by the Board, necessitating their immediate shutdown.
The companies include, pesa crash, pawa crash, cheza crash, vuma bet among others.

BCLB Halts Gambling Ads on all Media Platforms
This comes after BCLB ordered for the immediate suspension of all gambling advertisements and testimonials across all media platforms for a period of thirty days with effect from April 29, 2025.
It accused some gambling promoters of increasingly mischaracterizing gambling as a legitimate investment opportunity and a shortcut to wealth creation.
The Board said this erroneous depiction occasions adverse socioeconomic consequences, with devastating effects on individuals, families, and the broader community.
BCLB raised concerns about the rampant airing of gambling advertisements during the watershed period (5:00 am to 10:00 pm), thereby exposing vulnerable members of the population, particularly minors, who are gradually drawn into gambling-related addiction.
It clarified that gambling activities include betting, gaming, lottery prize competitions, and all related promotional undertakings.
“In view of these occurrences, and pursuant to its statutory mandate under the Betting, Lotteries and Gaming Act (Chapter 131, Laws of Kenya), the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) hereby orders the immediate suspension of all gambling advertisements and testimonials across all media platforms for a period of thirty days with effect from the date of this statement. This directive applies to all licensed gambling operators and covers all forms of advertisement and promotional activity,” BCLB said.
