Kenya is currently in the process of reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) following the retirement of former Chairperson Wafula Chebukati and his team in January 2023.
IEBC has been without a full leadership structure for over a year despite its critical role in overseeing elections.

This has raised concerns about electoral preparedness and governance ahead of the next general election.
Given the commission’s significance, the remuneration and benefits of its top officials have been a subject of public interest.

The chairperson earns a monthly gross salary of Ksh957,000.
This includes a basic salary of Ksh574,000, a house allowance of Ksh200,000 and a salary market adjustment of Ksh182, 800.

This is according to the remuneration and benefits review for the financial year 2023/2024 by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
Additionally, the chairperson is entitled to a car loan of Ksh10 million, airtime worth Ksh20,000 and a mortgage of Ksh40 million.
Vice Chairperson Earnings
On the other hand, IEBC Vice Chairperson receives a gross salary of Ksh792,519.
This includes a monthly salary of Ksh475,511, a house allowance of Ksh150,000 and market adjustment of Ksh167,008.
Additionally, she is entitled to a car loan of up to Ksh6 million and mortgage of up to Ksh30 million.
The Vice Chairperson also receive an annual leave allowance of Ksh50,000. and airtime worth Ksh15,000 per month.
The IEBC chairperson and deputy are provided with a government vehicle with an engine capacity not exceeding 3,000cc.

They receive group life insurance and personal accident cover valued at three times their annual pensionable salary.
They are also entitled to daily subsistence allowances for both local and international travel.
Further, the two are entitled to medical cover for them, one spouse, and up to four dependent children under 25 years.
The cover comprises an inpatient cover of Ksh10 million, an outpatient cover of Ksh300,000, maternity of Ksh150,000, dental cover of Ksh75,000 and optical of Ksh75,000.

Commissioners Salary & Benefits
The other commissioners receive Ksh765,113 monthly salary each as well as allowances.
This included Ksh459,113 as basic salary, Ksh150,000 as house allowance and Ksh156,075 as salary market adjustment.
Besides, they get an official car, airtime, and security and their family members receive full medical cover.
Retirement Package for IEBC Chairperson & Commissioners
The Chairperson and commissioners receive a lucrative retirement package amounting to 30 percent of their total salary for the six-year term they serve.
Based on SRC provisions, Chebukati received Ksh12.4 million in exit pay, while commissioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye each received Ksh10.3 million.
