Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has given the way forward on the impeachment motion against embattled Kericho Governor Erick Mutai who was impeached by members of the Kericho County Assembly.
Speaker Kingi in a Gazette notice on Tuesday, October 8, announced that the Senate will hold a special sitting on the ouster of Governor Mutai on the same day where charges made against him by the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) will be heard.

According to the Speaker, the sitting will be held in the Senate Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, from 2.30 p.m.
“Pursuant to Article 181 of the Constitution, section 33 (3) (a) of the County Governments Act (Cap. 265) and standing order 80 (1) (a) of the Senate Standing Orders. I appoint the sitting of the Senate on Tuesday, 8th October. 2024 at 2.30 p.m. as the sitting convened for the purpose of hearing the charges in the matter of the proposed removal from office, by impeachment, of (Dr.) Erick Kipkoech Mutai, the Governor of Kericho County,” reads part of the notice.

Kingi convenes special meeting on Mutai ouster
The special sitting comes after Kericho Governor was impeached by Kericho MCAs on Wednesday, October 2 despite a court order prohibiting debate on ouster motion.
Justice Joseph Sergon on Tuesday, October 2 temporarily stopped the impeachment process of Kericho County boss until a petition filed by him is heard and determined.

The MCAs had initially filed a notice of motion to ouster the Kericho Governor on September 12.
During the impeachment motion, at least 31 MCAs out of 47 voted in favor of the motion sponsored by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony.
Grounds Mutai was impeached
Among the grounds Mutai was impeached include gross violation of the constitution, contradicting the Public Finance Management (PFM) Act, 2012, and going against the Leadership and Integrity Act.
Additionally, the county boss was accused of allegedly overseeing misappropriation of public funds within his administration.
Moreover, the County boss was accused of allegedly engaging in indecent sexual acts with some females.

“There are numerous complaints of the Governor’s indecent and unnatural sexual behaviour by female partners,” Rogony the mover of the motion claimed.
“The victim of the abuse seeks anonymity at this stage and the mover of the motion shall, at the hearing of this motion, seek to have the victim heard in camera to protect her identity and dignity,” Rogony added.
