A heavy police presence has been deployed at the Kericho County Assembly precincts ahead of the tabling of an impeachment motion against Governor Erick Mutai.
In videos seen by The Kenya Times, law enforcers were seen standing in front of the County Assembly’s gate, with their Land Cruisers parked to the side.
Police officers carrying guns have been deployed at both Gate A and Gate B of the Assembly.
Earlier, police had blocked a section of Kericho residents from accessing the County Assembly in protest against Governor Erick Mutai’s impeachment motion.
The impeachment motion tabled by Sigowet MCA Kiprotich Rogony accuses the Governor of gross misconduct, gross violation of the constitution, gross violation of various national and County laws and abuse of office.
Allegations Against Governor Mutai
The MCAs have also accused the MCA of failing to go to work despite the hefty allowances he receives and indecent sexual conduct.
“There are numerous complaints of Governor’s indecent and natural sexual behavior by female partners who accuse the Governor of, instance, forcing them to be unconsented anal sex, dangerous and unprotected sex,” read part of the motion.

“The Victim of the abuse seeks anonymity at this stage and the Mover of the Motion shall, at the hearing of this Motion, seek to have the Victim heard in camera to protect her identity and dignity. Further, for the sake of concealing her identity, the Victim will be identified in a pseudo name.”
Furthermore, the mover of the motion has accused the Governor for “persistently intimidating, molesting, harassing county officers who do not sing to his tune leaving officers jittery and creating an atmosphere of fear, uncertainty and despondency in the county and thus creating a toxic work environment.
The Governor has also been alleged of operating with impunity as though he is above the law.
“On the second day of being sworn in to office, the Governor led a mob to invade a private land owned by one Mr. Joseah Kiplangat Kogo within Kericho town and tore down the fence,” the motion reads further.

Misappropriation of Funds in Kericho County
In June 2024, a Senate watchdog committee put Kericho Governor Eric Mutai on the spot over the expenditure of Ksh425.6 million meant for payment of pending bills by his administration.
County Public Accounts Committee chaired by Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’, pressed the governor to explain why his administration only spent Ksh 341.5 million to pay suppliers and contractors.
This is despite the county assembly having approved Ksh425.6 million for settlement of the pending bills. The county was also questioned over irregular expenditure on workshops and retreats.
Notably, the county was at pains to explain how the administration spent Ksh3.7 million on a trip to Nairobi to discuss a collapsed building in Kericho.
However, Kericho MCAs have adopted the motion to impeach Governor Erick Mutai who has seven days to respond to allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
