For quite some time, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has faced a political onslaught from his Mount Kenya backyard, with several leaders plotting to oust him as the region’s de facto leader.
Over the past few weeks, several political meetings have been held, with various leaders from the Mount Kenya region rallying behind his counterpart in the Cabinet, Interior Cabinet Secretary, Professor Kithure Kindiki.
On September 9, elected leaders from Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi counties unanimously endorsed Kindiki as their link to the executive.
Similarly, on September 12, several leaders, led by the National Assembly Majority Leader and accompanied by over 40 Members of Parliament (MPs), shared the same sentiments as their Mount Kenya East counterparts.
Gachagua and his allies have accused leaders aligned with President William Ruto’s camp of plotting to impeach him.
Nevertheless, Gachagua and his supporters have remained defiant, warning of serious political consequences if the plot succeeds.
Amid this impeachment storm, several leaders have firmly stood by Gachagua’s side.
Among the leaders who have been vocal about Gachagua’s impeachment is the Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga.
Mutahi Kahiga
Mutahi has on several occasions warned MPs planning to impeach Gachagua cautioning them that such action would change the dynamics of Mount Kenya politics.
He has described the impeachment motion as false and frivolous and asked those legislators intending to oust Gachagua to bring the motion to the National Assembly vowing to deal with it.
He has appealed to the President to bring his allies to order, decrying the President’s silence while those leaders close to him criticize Gachagua.
Despite the political intrigues facing Gachagua, the county boss has vowed to help the second in command to fight from within.
Senator Joe Nyutu
Another leader who has stood by Gachagua’s side is Murang’a Senator, Joe Nyutu.
While speaking in a church service at Kiambu County on September 22, Nyutu called upon President Ruto to distance himself from leaders plotting to impeach Gachagua warning him that the impeachment talks are detrimental to the stability of the country.
At the same time, he pleaded with Azimio leader Raila Odinga to talk to his allies not to impeach DP Gachagua.

“You have suffered politically for many years. President Moi detained you for 9 years. Don’t let what was done to you be inflicted on Gachagua. Martial your troops and tell them to rethink their decision,” Nyutu urged.
Karungo Thangwa
Kiambu Senator Karungo Thangwa has offered unwavering support to DP Gachagua since his political tribulations began.
Recently, the senator spoke at a church function and told the congregants that if the impeachment motion reaches the floor of the National Assembly, he will conclude that President Ruto is behind it because he has the power to reject certain issues before they reach parliament.
He further said that impeaching Gachagua would be a betrayal to the electorate who Gachagua rallied to support Ruto’s presidency.
He argued that people from the Mount Kenya Region contributed significantly to Wiliam Ruto’s presidency and it would be an insult to them if Gachagua is impeached.
James Gakuya
The Embakasi North lawmaker has been very vocal about Gachagua’s impeachment plot.
On September 22 at a roadside rally in Kiambu county, Gakuya alleged that several leaders within the Mount Kenya region had been given money to oust the second in command from the presidency.
He warned those leaders who think they are throwing Gachagua under the bus, not realizing they are throwing the Mount Kenya people under the bus.

At the same time, he posed a question to President Ruto asking him what wrong Gacgahua did to him to deserve such treatment.
He also criticized the broad-based government arguing that the President appointed new people in his cabinet who did not help him ascend to the presidency.
Cate Waruguru
The former Laikipia Woman Representative has also been a staunch supporter of DP Gachagua amid the impeachment storm.
Recently while speaking at a church function Waruguru implied that the president brought his former rival, Raila Odinga, into the broad-based government to destabilize Kenya Kwanza.
She further alleged the move by the president to award Odinga’s allies several positions in his government was to try and oust Gachagua from the Kenya Kwanza government.
