The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) has warned of adverse weather and sea conditions expected along the Kenyan coast between September and December 2026.
In its advisory on September 23, KMA said the period could be characterized by strong winds, rough seas, high waves, heavy rainfall, and reduced visibility, posing risks to vessels and people engaging in activities at sea and along the coastline.
“The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) wishes to advise the general public of anticipated adverse weather and sea conditions along the Kenyan coast during the period September to December 2026,” read part of the statement.
“The conditions may include strong winds, rough seas, high waves, heavy rainfall and reduced visibility which pose a risk to vessels and persons undertaking activities at sea and along the coastline.”
KMA Issues Advisory to Kenyans
The Authority has advised the public to avoid venturing into the sea during periods of adverse weather and rough sea conditions.
Boat owners and operators have also been urged to properly secure their vessels while underway, moored or at anchor, while passengers and crew should wear life jackets at all times while on board.
Additionally, fisherfolk and other maritime stakeholders have been advised to exercise caution and postpone non-essential activities at sea whenever conditions deteriorate.
The authority also urged vessels already at sea to monitor weather updates and seek safe shelter where necessary.
KMA further called on coastal communities to remain alert to strong winds, high waves and heavy rainfall, and follow directions issued by relevant authorities.
The Authority urged the public to monitor official weather and maritime safety updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) and KMA.

Kenya Met Releases 7 Day Maritime Weather Forecast
The Kenya Meteorological Service (KMS) has forecast wave heights of between 0.2 metres and 2.2 metres along Kenya and Tanzania waters from September 23 to 29, 2026.
The department said winds over Kenya and Tanzania waters are expected to range between 4 and 18 knots, with conditions varying from slight to rough seas during the forecast period.
On Wednesday, September 23, wave heights are expected to range from 0.25 metres to 2.0 metres, with winds of between 4 and 20 knots.
The highest wave heights during the week are forecast for Friday, September 25, when waves could reach 2.2 metres, while winds are expected to range between 10 and 24 knots.

On Saturday, September 26, wave heights are expected to range from 0.4 metres to 2.0 metres, with winds of 6 to 22 knots.
On Sunday, September 27, waves are forecast at 0.4 to 2.0 metres, with winds of 8 to 20 knots.
The department expects wave heights of 0.4 to 2.2 metres on both Monday, September 28, and Tuesday, September 29, with winds reaching up to 26 knots on Monday and 24 knots on Tuesday.
KMD classifies wave heights of 2.0 to 2.9 metres as moderate to rough conditions, requiring caution when conducting marine activities.
The department also warns that winds above 21 knots can significantly disturb ocean conditions and create dangerous conditions for marine operations.
