Tragedy struck in Machakos County on May 1, 2024, as a senior police officer lost his life in a devastating incident where his car was swept away by floods.
Cyprian Walunya Kasili, a traffic base commander stationed at a Ruai Police Station, was the victim of the tragic event.

According to the reports, the incident occurred around 4:40 pm as Kasili was driving back to his home in Lowland Estate, within the Kware Area.
Eyewitnesses recounted seeing a harrowing scene where Kasili’s vehicle was swept away and submerged in the raging waters of River Kware.

“It was reported by members of the public at 1630 hours that there was a vehicle submerged in River Kware,” read the police report in part.
Police efforts to retrieve the body
Upon receiving the distressing news, the police immediately responded to the scene with their efforts focused on retrieving Kasili’s body from the submerged vehicle.

However, their attempts were too late as the senior police officer had already succumbed to the raging floodwaters.

“Police visited the scene and retrieved the body of one No 237575 CI Cyprian Walunya Kasili base commander Ruai who had been swept away and drowned in his car,” further read the report.
According to reports the vehicle remains submerged in the flooded river, awaiting recovery once the water levels subside.
His body was transported to the Patjud Funeral Home, where it will undergo an autopsy and preparations for the funeral.
Floods in Machakos County
This heartbreaking incident is part of a larger tragedy unfolding in different parts of the country as heavy rains persist.
The recent heavy rains have led to widespread flooding, claiming the lives of over 100 people and causing significant damage to property.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued warnings, urging the public to exercise extreme caution in low-lying areas, flood plains, and urban regions with poor drainage systems.
Additionally, the government agency also warned about the risks associated with driving through flooded roads and wading in fast-moving waters.
