KAMPALA — When entertainment fans see an artiste on stage, the promoter who made the show possible is rarely the person they remember.

For Ssenkaali Joseph, however, working behind the scenes has become a career.

The 27-year-old entertainment promoter has built his work around events, artiste promotion and creating links between Ugandan creatives and audiences in the diaspora, particularly in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Born on February 12, 1999, in Lukaya Town Council, Kalungu District, Joseph grew up in the Greater Masaka region.

He attended Kamuwunga Primary School and later Mpeera Secondary School.

His interest in entertainment developed while growing up in an environment where music, social gatherings and local events were an important part of community life.

Rather than becoming a performer, Joseph became interested in what happens behind the stage — bringing people together, organising events and giving artistes platforms from which to reach audiences.

That interest eventually developed into Ssenkaali Promotions Ltd, the company he founded and now heads as chief executive officer.

Between Kampala and Dubai

Ssenkaali Promotions operates between Kampala and Dubai, with its work covering artiste management, music promotion and distribution, event organisation, digital marketing and branding.

The company works with musicians, DJs and other creatives, with a particular focus on helping Ugandan and East African talent reach audiences outside the domestic market.

Dubai has become an important part of that strategy.

The city has a large East African community and regularly hosts entertainment events featuring artistes from the region. For Ugandan promoters, the diaspora therefore represents an important audience and commercial market.

Joseph has sought to build connections between the two sides — the creatives producing content in Uganda and the audiences consuming it abroad.

His work involves promoting artistes, organising events and using digital platforms to keep entertainment content circulating among audiences in Uganda and the diaspora.

Creating the Showing Awards

In 2024, Joseph expanded his activities by establishing the Showing Awards.

The awards recognise people working across Uganda’s entertainment, digital and creative sectors.

The categories include musicians, DJs, content creators, models, influencers, promoters and entrepreneurs, among others.

The platform has also maintained a Uganda-Dubai connection, bringing together entertainment personalities and creatives from both sides.

By 2026, the Showing Awards were preparing for their third edition, with Kampala taking center stage.

The nomination process brought forward names from different areas of the entertainment and digital industry, including established personalities and emerging creatives.

The awards have consequently become another part of Joseph’s efforts to create a platform where entertainers and other creative professionals can receive recognition and meet people within their industry.

The man behind the promotions

Much of Joseph’s work takes place away from the cameras.

A promoter has to think about the artiste, the venue, the audience and the publicity surrounding an event. In the digital age, that work also extends to social media campaigns, online branding and maintaining contact with audiences before and after an event.

Joseph has made this area central to his professional identity.

He is commonly known as Promota Ssenkaali Joseph Kampala, a name closely associated with his entertainment activities.

Through his digital platforms, he promotes artistes, events and activities connected to Ssenkaali Promotions and the Showing Awards.

His career has also coincided with a major change in how Ugandan entertainers reach their audiences.

An artiste no longer has to depend entirely on local radio, television or physical concerts to find listeners. A song released in Kampala can reach a Ugandan living in Dubai within minutes, while an event advertised online can attract an audience from several countries.

That development has created new opportunities for promoters who understand both physical events and digital marketing.

A bridge for Ugandan talent

Joseph’s work sits within this changing entertainment landscape.

His business connects people — artistes with audiences, creatives with promoters, and Uganda’s entertainment industry with its diaspora.

The Kampala-Dubai connection has remained a defining feature of that work.

For an entertainer, reaching a new audience can open the door to performances, collaborations and other opportunities. For a promoter, the challenge is to identify those opportunities and create the platforms through which the two sides can meet.

That is the space Joseph has chosen to occupy.

His journey from Lukaya to Kampala and Dubai is, in many ways, a story of a young entrepreneur finding a place in an industry where the people behind the scenes can be just as important as those holding the microphone.

Through Ssenkaali Promotions and the Showing Awards, Joseph is building his name around that role — not as the artiste on stage, but as the person working to put the artiste there.
