Detectives from the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested two individuals pretending to be officers from the investigative agency.
In a statement, DCI said Nicholas Okoth Owino and David Otieno Odhiambo were involved in an impersonation plot to steal from members of the public.
“Two suspects are in custody following their arrest by detectives from the DCI Nairobi Regional Headquarters for impersonating DCI officers and defrauding unsuspecting members of the public,” DCI said.
Reports indicate that Owino and Odhiambo unlawfully extorted over Ksh200,000 from a citizen by falsely presenting themselves as DCI officers.
They claimed they could expedite an ongoing investigation, luring the victim into their scam.
As the investigation unfolds, detectives are exploring the possibility that the duo may have targeted other victims in a similar fashion.
The DCI urges anyone who has fallen prey to these fraudsters to come forward and report at any nearest police station or #FichuaKwaDCI by calling 0800 722 203 to report anonymously.
Fichua Kwa DCI Campaign
In September, detectives drawn from the Counter Violent Extremism Directorate and Liason and Corporate Communications Directorate conducted a one-day campaign for the #FichuakwaDCI hotline number 0800 722 203 within Isiolo and Marsabit Counties.
The team distributed 200 branded jackets among bodaboda operators in the two counties to promote sharing of information on crime and criminals in an endeavour to achieve a safer, secure & crime-free nation.
Further, the investigative agency explained that the reflector jackets are part of a consignment of 1,800 units that were donated to the DCI by the US Embassy in Nairobi.

UK Minister for Africa at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), James Duddridge officially opened the DCI Hotline Center was on December 10, 2020.
The call center is manned by a team of vetted multilingual officers, who receive and analyze information from anonymous callers before forwarding the same to the responsible units for action.
“#FichuakwaDCI any time 24/7 at zero cost. Sharing information on wanted criminals, perpetrators of serious crimes and criminal activities happening around us is the pragmatic way to go in fighting crime,” DCI said.

Recent Impersonation Cases
In October, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested two suspects who masqueraded as officers from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) officials while one pretended to be from the Commission.
The two suspects were arrested on October 8, 2024, as they were inspecting goods in shops within Bamburi area in Mombasa.
Posing as KEBS officials, the suspects were arresting, detaining and extorting shop owners alleging that they were selling expired goods.
Similarly, a man pretending to be an EACC officer was arrested following investigations into numerous complaints from victims of extortion.
