The University of Nairobi (UoN) has been ranked first in the latest university rankings, beating archrivals Kenyatta University (KU).
The top five (5) universities according to the ranking include Nairobi University (UoN), Kenyatta University (KU), Jomo Kenyatta University of Technology (JKUAT), Strathmore, and Mount Kenya University (MKU).

According to the survey by EduRank, UoN secured its place among the top 1,000 universities in global rating.
Nairobi University (UoN)
The University of Nairobi was ranked first in Kenya, 805th in global rating, and 8th in Africa.

Further, its progress in the rankings this year is attributed to advancements in its research output with over 20,000 publications, offering the best courses that recorded the highest admission.
Additionally, the impact of more than 100 notable alumni such as President William Ruto, Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and Kenyan Lawyer James Orengo among others.

Kenyatta University
Kenyatta University was ranked the second-best university in Kenya while taking the 36th position in Africa and the 2135th rating globally.
Unlike Nairobi University with over 20,000 publications, KU had 8,541 academic publications and 85,581 citations attributable to the university with 16 notable alumni.
JKUAT University
The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology – JKUAT ranked 3rd in Kenya, 2613th in the global 2025 rating.
Additionally, the ranking was because of 3 factors including, over 10,000 global academic publications, with notable non-academic reputations and an impact from 5 notable alumni.
Strathmore University
Strathmore University ranked 4th in Kenya, 3100th in the global 2025 rating, with over 1,000 academic publications and 10,000 citations.
The institution has the impact of 4 notable alumni in Kenya and a good non-academic reputation.

Mount Kenya University
Mount Kenya University ranked 5th in Kenya, 3203rd in the global 2025 rating.
The ranking was because of 3 factors including over 2,000 academic publications, 8,435 citations attributed to the university, and a non-academic reputation.

Other Universities that appeared in the top 10 best universities includes Moi University, Egerton, Technical University of Kenya (TUK), Catholic University and Pwani University.
