Utumishi Boys Academy is a boys-only national secondary school in Kenya. The idea of establishing the school dates back to the early 1960s, when plans to create an institution for children of National Police Service officers were first conceived.

It was however not until 1991 that the then Commissioner of Police, the late Philip Kilonzo, began to implement the idea.

The first steering committee was formed on May 30, 1991, chaired by Elijah Sumbeiywo, a former Senior Deputy Commissioner of Police.

On December 30, 1992, the first Principal, Willie M. Mugoh, was posted to the school, soon joined by twelve teachers.

Utumishi Boys Academy History

The Academy admitted its first 80 boys and girls on January 26, 1993. At the time, they were accommodated in the Primary School section since the main school complex was still under construction.

Students initially used timber structures at the Anti-Stock Theft Unit Police lines as dormitories and the dining hall.

As the student population grew, the school outgrew the primary facilities, and by January 1995, it relocated to the still-incomplete main complex structures.

Except for a brief period between April 1994 and October 1997 when construction stalled, Utumishi Boys Academy has consistently grown in both physical infrastructure and academic performance.

After Principal Mugoh was transferred, Peters Orega took over leadership of the school. Orega has since retired, and the current Principal is Dr. Samuel Gitonga Maina.

Performance

Each year, over 300 students are admitted to the institution based on academic merit and individual choice, in line with Kenya’s education policy.

Until 2023, admissions were based on performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.

However, this was replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), introduced under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework.

Utumishi Boys has over the years demonstrated outstanding academic performance in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

In the 2024 KCSE, the school had 317 candidates, with more than 98% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.

Notably, 8 students scored a straight A, while 40 earned an A-. Additionally, 75 students attained a B+ grade, 96 scored a B, and 70 managed a B-.

23 students scored a C+, and the lowest grade recorded was a C, obtained by five students.

The school achieved a mean score of 9.15 in the 2024 national examinations.

School Fees

The government previously issued a directive outlining the maximum annual school fees that parents should pay. Under new guidelines introduced in 2020 by the Ministry of Education, Kenya’s 103 national schools were grouped into four clusters.

Utumishi Boys Academy was placed in Cluster Three (III), meaning the official annual fee cap for students is approximately Ksh75,798.

However, actual fees may vary slightly from school to school due to additional charges levied by individual institutions—such as for uniforms, motivation programs, or co-curricular activities.

Location and contacts

Utumishi Boys is located in Gilgil, Nakuru county, in the Rift Valley Region.
