Instant messaging platforms like WhatsApp have become essential tools for communication, connecting millions of people worldwide.

However, as these platforms grow in popularity, they become prime targets for cybercriminals looking to exploit vulnerabilities and gain unauthorized access.

A compromised WhatsApp account can lead to significant risks, from personal data theft to being used as a gateway for scamming your friends and family. Therefore, it is important to act quickly if you suspect that your account has been hacked.

The good news is that there are several immediate actions you can take to regain control of your account and protect your information from further harm.

WhatsApp has built-in security features and steps to help users recover from a breach. This article outlines the critical steps you need to take if your WhatsApp account is compromised, to help you restore your account and keep it secure in the future.

Step-by-Step Guide When Your WhatsApp is Hacked

If your WhatsApp account has been compromised, it is important to act swiftly to regain control and secure your information.

Here are the steps you should follow:

1. Log Out of All Devices

The first step to take when you notice suspicious activity on your account is to log out of all devices.

WhatsApp offers a simple way to do this. Navigate to Settings > Linked Devices and log out of all devices that have access to your account.

This will ensure that the hacker is immediately disconnected from your account.

2. Request a New Code to Log Back In

Once you’ve logged out of all devices, you will need to re-access your WhatsApp account.

Open the app and enter your phone number to receive a verification code via SMS or a phone call.

Input the code to log back in, which will automatically log the hacker out of your account.

3. Enable Two-Step Verification

To add an extra layer of protection, enable WhatsApp’s two-step verification.

Head to Settings > Account > Two-Step Verification, where you’ll be prompted to set up a six-digit PIN. This will prevent unauthorized access to your account, even if someone has access to your phone number.

4. Notify Your Contacts

Once you regain access to your account, it is important to inform your contacts about the breach.

Let them know your account was compromised and warn them to avoid responding to any suspicious messages.

Hackers often use hijacked accounts to scam others, making this a vital step in protecting your friends and family.

5. Contact WhatsApp Support

However, if you’re unable to regain control of your account, contact WhatsApp support for assistance.

Send an email to [email protected] with the subject “Lost/Stolen: Please deactivate my account” and include your phone number with the relevant country code.

WhatsApp will help deactivate your account to prevent further misuse.

How to Protect Your Phone

6. Check for Malicious Apps or Spyware

Cybercriminals sometimes install malware or spyware on your phone to monitor your activity.

Use a reliable antivirus app to scan your phone for potential threats. If you find any malicious apps, delete them immediately.

7. Restore from Backup

If your messages were deleted during the breach, you may be able to restore them from a recent backup.

To ensure this feature is available in the future, go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup and confirm your backup settings.

8. Review Your Account Security Regularly

Lastly, make it a habit to regularly review the security of your WhatsApp account. Keep both the app and your phone’s operating system up to date.

Moreover, use strong passwords for your phone lock and any accounts connected to WhatsApp, like your email.
